Taking steps backwards

In 1955, IH came out with the hundred series. On the big tractors you could have up to three hydraulic remotes if you didn't opt for fast hitch. Most of the 300/400/350/450/460/560 tractors I come across have 2 remotes plus fast hitch, or three remotes.

When they came out with the '06 series, IH took a step backward. Two remotes was the limit from the factory, and many only came with one. Our 756 Farmall (not Custom) only had one remote until Dad installed a second one in the 1980's.

My 300 has three hydraulic levers but two of them are for the fast
hitch cylinders so I only have one remote to use. I really like the
fast hitch, this is my first one.

My 300 has the Fast hitch which I really like and PTO but no remotes, they are just on the "someday" list if I ever find levers around here that'll work.

Our 656 came from factory with one set behind the seat and one set ahead of the dash under the hood. The front set we used for duall loader.

Not anything connected to this particular tractor. But it seams that all companys do that whenever they change models. Keep the bad ideas and get rid of the good ideas for bad ideas all in the name of progress (regress?). Same for everything, dog food included, change to imporved and Dog that liked it will no longer eat it.

On the hundred series, there is a way to lock out the front tilt cylinder on the Fast Hitch, and use its hookup as a second remote. AFAIK you only need the tilt for plowing, the rest of the year it's just redundant.

Isn't it funny how the need for hydraulics increased yet the number of remotes on the tractors DECREASED, though?

I think that one of the reasons that the hundred
series (300 - 400) came out with three remotes was
during that time front mounted cultivators were the
norm. This made it easy to raise and lower each
side (and the rear plows) independently. Rear
mounted cultivators gained popularity when the
cultivation of 8 and 12 rows at a time became the
norm.
