1955 300 Steering Issue

Here is the first of many questions I'll be asking. Last week I purchased a 1955 Farmall 300 with a factory wide front. Yesterday I went and picked it up. Today when I popped it into 5th I noticed the right front wheel is very loose. Upon further inspection, I found the spindle shaft turns in the steering arm close to 1/2 an inch where it connects to at the top. What's the problem? Is the shaft worn beyond repair? Is the key too small? Or does the arm clamp just need to be tightened more?

Thanks

Bruce
Heres the problem area

There is a key in the attachment. Take it apart and look for a wallowed out keyway or key. A machine shop can recut a larger keyway and supply a new key to fit. Jim

30 seconds with two wrenches to tighten the bolt is essentially "free" and could very well fix the problem. Try that first.

It could have been left loose for so long that the hole is wallowed out and you won't be able to tighten it. You won't know until you try, but if tightening it doesn't help then you can try to wrap the spindle with something to shim it out and give the arm more to clamp on. Roof flashing, or a cut-up beer can works, and again, nearly free.

You gotta deal with the white elephant in the room first. The loose steering arm is the white elephant. Once you have that fixed, if it still wobbles you can go looking for less obvious causes of the problem.

Most of the time simply tightening it will work.

I tried to tighten it but it seemed really tight as it was. I'll put the impact to it tomorrow and see if I can torque it down. If not I guess I'll take it apart and see what the actual problem is.

The bolt looks too short also. Take the arm totally off, check the tie rod end, get dust seal. Then install new longer fine thread bolt, grade 5, new nut, new lock washer, new key and tighten it up.
