straight pipe on H

My muffler was in bad shape, rust chips falling out when removed. I made a straight pipe to replace it. Will the lack of back pressure hurt anything?

es it will definitely hurt something! Your hearing! Cost you a lot of money later down the road, too! Hearing aids are expensive.

Ditto here on the muffler !!!

This has been discussed on here before.Hearing loss is something that happens over time AND IS PERMANENT.The REAL damage that shows up is AFTER it is TOO LATE to do anything about it!!!

Back pressure have you ever looked in a tractor muffler?? If you have looked you should notice that you can see in one end and out the other so what back pressure?? As for hurting the engine no it will not but yes it can/will overtime hurt your ears. That is why when I mess with a tractor the hearing aids stay in the house. But my hearing is bad from being on the JFK and listening to air craft taking off and landing etc

Haven't any of you people heard of HEARING PROTECTION!?! Why must this come up every time somebody talks about a straight pipe?

Spend the 40 bucks and buy a muffler. It will sound better than a straight pipe. At least you will be able to hear it when its running. If your worried about back pressure, stick a rain cap on the muffler and let it flap in the breeze.

You need hearing protection with a muffler, too. Our tractors had mufflers on them before hearing protection became popular -- I'm still deaf. With a straight pipe and ear muffs, I would guess the noise is equivalent to a muffler.

I am 75%? deaf that started with an H with a muffler. With a straight pipe, I probably wouldn't be able to hear myself belch, or the other thing.

NO!

Straight pipe will work fine. H and most all the old low compression/rpm motors don't need back pressure.

Some of you folks are in rare form, you must be officers in the hearing police department. I'll bet some of you go door to door checking for mattress tags and water saver restrictors too.

One farm I worked at had a pair of ear muffs hanging from the light bar on every M. No reason not to buy a cheap pair and do it. I use my WorkTunes so I bring my hearing protection from tractor to tractor.

I still say there is no way a straight pipe with hearing protection could ruin your hearing.

I spent years in the navy and came out with poor hearing and wore ear plugs all the time. They only do so much and that is why I now have hearing aids due to loud noises on navy ships. Protection only goes so far but does not do it all

We are not saying it WONT work Dean,we are saying it is NOT the thing to be doing.

There is about a "spit" of difference between running a muffler and running a straight pipe performance wise on these things,EXCEPT the muffler will protect you hearing better,so why run one without a muffler????

(And I bet I could have this coversation face to face with you just using our quiet "indoor voices" and I could clearly understand every word. ;)

Ear protection slows the hearing loss, it does not prevent it, pipe or not. And you need the best one you can get. The cheaper ear muffs are pretty poor.

I've been seeing this more and more (the need for "back pressure").

Who in the heck starts these silly stories anyway?

Total bunk.

A muffler isn't needed for the engine, it's for the operator's comfort and safety (hearing and fatigue). Similar to the suspension on the seat, the tractor will work just as well without it, the operator not so well.

loosen up a little bit you old farts! Nothing sounds sweeter than an old farmall under load with a straight pipe! I doubt that he is going to plow 80 acres with it, and as far as back press,,,,,get real,,,,Its an H farmall!
