Hey guys, I am looking at buying my first tractor. I and a IH fan and there are 3 different tractors close to where I live that I have always liked.

There is a 73 1466 with the deluxe (white) cab, a 79 1086, and a 83 5088.

The 5088 is at the very top of the budget the other 2 are very affordable.

I will use it for hay work, pulling 550 bu gravity wagons, some chisel plowing and other odds and ends around the farm.

All advice will be great, pros and cons of all of them and what to look for on all of them, Thanks to all in advance!

Yea that price on the 1466 seems to be real high. Go check the serial #. Maybe they know something you don't. Could be a consignment tractor too. Dealer here takes equipment on consigment. Had a 560 gasser there for 4 years at 4500. Owner finally picked it up cause it wasn't selling.

I got my 2001 laosed there. Was listed at 1500. I offered 1000. They called the owner who accepted my offer.

IMHO the 1466 is grossly overpriced. For that it better have a fresh engine, fresh TA, new tires, and a PROFESSIONAL paint job.

You will pay at least $100 per weight. It's ridiculous but the JD pullers are snarfing them all up, driving the price through the roof.

I agree that 1466 is way over priced. Unless like you said
complete overhaul and new rubber. If it were me I would
keep looking.

You don't *HAVE* to buy either one of them. There are lots of tractors for sale.

Assuming both tractors are in good shape and priced reasonably, you then need to evaluate what you're looking for. The 1466 is solid, reliable, simple, basic farm power. The 1086 adds some creature comforts, but also has more that can go wrong.

I know I don't have to buy just on of those 2, I
just would like to busniess somewhat local. The
1466 is in really nice shape and has 4966hrs on it
and the 1086 it a little bit rougher looking and
has only 3500 hrs on it. The 86 they are asking
$10500 for and the 66 they are asking $15500. The
66 also has a full rack of front weights on it and
the 86 doesn't have any, witch I know a can get
some at an acution sometime

The 1466 is the simplest to maintenance and best in my opinion. The shifting is under the seat on the 1086 and from what i've seen not near as nice to work on. The 5088 I've not been around. The fan shaft through the radiator would be enough for me.

Buy the one thats best mechanicaly, be sure you have fluid in the rears for big wagons. As long as you have wagon brakes you will be all right. David

you mentioned pulling wagons the 5088 would be the better choice in my opinion, as the tranny is syncronized shifting up and down. it is possible to up shift a 1086 without toooo much grinding gears but down is almost impossible without stopping. We used to have a 5088 that dad hauled manure with and really liked the shifting over the 986 we used one time.

Hard to go wrong with any of those, I would choose the 1086 personally.

If your looking for comfort there is a world of difference
between a 66, 86, and 88 cab. I have owned 66's and 86' and
prefer 86's. Now on power the 1466 has more power than
both the 1086 and 5088. Basically the 5088 is a revised
version of the 1086. Parts are also limited on 88 series
because they didn't make them very long. If I was going to do
a lot of heavy tillage I would go with the 1466. If just doing
chores and limited tillage smaller equipment go with either
the 1086 or 5088. All three have good road speed for hauling
wagons.

I would pick the 5088 if you can afford it. They are a great tractor.
