Knocking in transmission of 1949 Farmall H

The tractor was run without enough transmission oil for a while. There is a knocking in the transmission (under the seat) when the tractor is being driven.

It still works, but I would like to know how long it might be before it stops working.

How big a job is it to swap out a transmission?

Thanks for the help.

If the noise is in all gears except 5th, itcould be a chipped or broken tooth in the constant mesh gear set. (easily seen with the belt pulley (or pulley blanking plate) removed). If it is in all gears, it could be a front drive coupling failure (outside the trans) that can be fixed pretty easily if the belly pump is removed. If it is in only one gear, the issue is probably a chipped or broken tooth on that set of gears. I would not run it in the gears it happens. Actually it is diagnose first then decide. Broken teeth lead to disaster. Pulling loads make it have a shorter timeline to disaster. Jim

Could just be the pilot bearing gone bad. There isn't much to an H transmission. Pull the cover off and look for problems before investing in replacement parts.
