what kind of coil for a 300?

The coil on my 300 seemed to have quit working today while I was skidding a log, at least it would not run and when I put in a spare coil I had it did run again. The coil was the one that came on the tractor and was pretty old looking, so is the spare I put on today. I think it is time to buy a new coil but I am mystified by the variety of coils out there. The 300 has a battery distributor, not a mag. My inclination is to buy a cheap one off ebay or see if I can get one at NAPA but if it would be wiser to buy a more expensive coil I can do that. Any advice will be much appreciated.

There used to be a difference in coils. Not anymore. A coil is a coil, and you can pay a lot, or pay a little, and you will get the same coil, but why go to Ebay? There are plenty of other on-line sellers who sell the same coil, and the profits go into THEIR pockets instead of a huge corporation like Ebay. In fact, you can even buy a coil right here on YT.

Zach - Depends whether if your 300 is 6 or 12 volts. Also if 12 volts, whether it has a ballast resistor.

If 6 volts, or 12 volts WITH a ballast resistor, NAPA #IC7SB is good.

If 12 volts WITHOUT an external resistor then use a #IC10SP.

Either will cost about $20 - $25. If you don't have a NAPA nearby, most any auto parts store will stock equivalent coils.

If you are a stickler for originality, OEM style coils are available. But you are gonna pay a lot more.

Only reason I am looking at ebay is that I can get a coil for under
$20 shipped. Only 10% of the money goes to ebay, plus 3% for
paypal and the rest goes to the seller.

6 or 12 volt system??? If a 6 volt system buy a true 6 volt coil if 12 volt buy a true 12 volt coil as in one that says right on it no resister needed. 6 volt coil will likely say resister needed. Coil do not go bad often unless you have a 6 volt coil and running a 12 volt system with out a ballast resister and if so the coil can even explode and when it does it will sound like a shot gun going off. Guess how I know that one????????

Thanks very much. I called NAPA and they have the 12 volt one for $23.95, so I will get one there and eliminate the ballast resistor.

Thanks, I converted it to 12v with resistor when I was working on the tractor over the summer. That explosion thing sounds kind of scary to me.

Ya it can be a bit of a heart attack sort of thing. Had one blow up in a VW bug 6 volts years ago. Back then I did not know about the 6 volt and 12 volt differences in coils and stalled the engine and forgot to turn the ignition back off. An hour or so later there was a big bang and the coil exploded under the hood and made one heck of a mess out of things. Coils are filled with oil so had oil and wire all over the place

Just get one from NAPA the coil or on the box it will say if it needs a resistor they arent expensive why get one from ebay you have no way knowing if its even a good one.

Well I don't know about differences but I will say that I bought a coil at big box farm store to replace an old that I thought was a problem, it soon died, tried the old one from IH and it worked. The real problem turned out to be bad wiring. So I'd say there are quality differences in addition to technical ones.
