Voltage regulator

I took the Wilson voltage reg off my IH backhoe and found it half full of water. Do you think it may be ruined or is there hope to clean it up and get it working? I just bought the machine, it never charged since I brought it home and drains a new 12V battery in a day.

I agree, that regulator is dead. At best it will just drain your battery. If you dry it out and re-connect it untested, there is a good chance that it will fry the generator and/or the battery. Unless it is something very rare and expensive, replace it. There is a fair chance that there is damage to the generator also.

Thanks, I was afraid of that. Its pretty corroded inside. I have no idea how long its been sitting like this either. Before I buy a new one, I think I"ll check the generator. Might be a good time to upgrade to an alternator.

If you clean it up and the insulation on the wire is still good you can probably get it to function again but it is not likely to give good long term service. Once corrosion starts on the contacts they rarely work reliably even after cleaning them.
