IH 340 utility charging problems

This tractor was givin to me by a friend. When I got it it would't charge the battery. It was hooked to a 12 volt battery, negative ground. I had the altenator rebuilt but when I tried to start it it just started clicking and the wires on the starter started smoking so I unhooked the battery. Can someone possibly help me? I seen in a book that this is a 12 volt positive ground system, how can I figure out if it is?

With an alternator you can almost guarantee your 340 is negative ground (virtually all alternators are neg ground). You can verify by looking closely at the alternator - voltage and ground polarity are usually stamped into the alternator case near the belt tension adjusting ear.

Most likely the smoking wires when you try to crank is a bad (loose or corroded) battery cable connection at the starter solenoid. Recommend cleaning/tightening all battery cable connections and see if the problem goes away. If it does not look for a bad solenoid or a stuck starter.

I agree, if your battery was hooked up with Negative ground, it was probably a poor connection. This assumes the alternator conversion was wired correctly. Jim

Look at Delco generator images, then Delco Alternator Images Decide what you actually have.
If alternator, it is 99.5 times of 100 a Negative ground. If it is a gen, it can be either pos or neg and can be setup to be either with no parts changes. Let us know.
If it is an alt. And it was hooked up negative ground (as it is supposed to be) and it smokes when hooked up and is switched to start, (and stays smoking till the bat terminal is disconnected) the starter relay may be bad. If the alt was a problem, it would smoke as soon as the battery was connected. Jim
