quality of decals

I would like to buy a set of decals for my M. On-line they are all about the same price ($25ish)and are listed as vinyl. I called a local dealer and he said he could get two types, one is screen printed and costs about what the vinyl costs on-line. They also has vinyl decals for more than three times the price. Any suggestions on what to look for? Spent a lot of time and money so far on this project so I don't want to put crappy decals on it, but I don't want to be wasting money either.

Thanks for your help.

Rod, Dont put the cheap decals on use the vinyl cut good quality decals. You will be a lot happier at the end of your project. I can get you some as well as many others but use the good vinyl cut ones. Dwayne

The cheap ones are MYLAR, not vinyl.

Mylar will give you the look of the original water-slide type, with peel-and-stick convenience.

There are different grades of mylar decals. Some do a better job of replicating the original look than others. You have to be careful and make sure you get the correct ones.

The set I put on my Super H were drawn out on a computer, not copied from the original decals. The "H" is wrong, way too wide. Unfortunately I didn't realize it until much later, after I had already put them on. Another set I bought for a Super M had the colors reversed on the Super M circle.

While mylar decals are printed on a clear sheet and you stick the whole sheet to the tractor, cut vinyl decals only have the colored parts to stick on the tractor. Some people don't like these because they don't have the clear backing like the originals. They're higher quality than any mylar decal.

I use to think the vinyl one were better, but I put a set on my M back in 2001 and they are starting to fade. I put a set of the mylar ones on another one of my Ms I think it was in 95 or 96, and they still look good, no fading or anything. Both tractors are inthe same building, nd M #2 sees the outside more than my other M. The vinyl does look better at first! BTW, both sets came from the dealer!

Just put the dealer decals on my Super M, $34.51. Look good, I think that's what is on my Super C also and they look perfect after about 20 years although it does'nt get out of the shed much.

As mkirsch implied it is the background that changes color, for the most part. Vinyl cut decals do not have a background.

Licensed by Case-IH does not mean historicaly correct. I don't know about newer stuff but the 39 and older sets are far from original. (wording, colors, sizes, etc...)

"Licensed by Case-IH" means the decal manufacturer has not violated any copyrite laws. It also means that the decal maker is producing the decals exactly as Case-IH wants them, because over the years the design DID change, and when that new design was put into place, the corporate decision was made to obsolete the old design, so using the new design on an older tractor IS correct according to Case-IH.

Anyone who is making decals for tractors that are still under a registered trademark (nearly all of them) and does not have written permission or consent from the brand name, is in violation of copyrite laws.

(quoted from post at 03:26:15 09/28/12) How long are copy right laws in effect??
Do they expire like a patent?

Copyrites are in effect until the company who holds those copyrites no longer exists, and even then someone else ( or another company) can buy those copyrites.
