Nearly every Farmall H and M I have seen have suffered damage to the fixed drawbar. Usually bent, but sometimes broken. In fitting a swinging drawbar to my H, I made the modifications seen in the pictures. This makes the fixed drawbar far stronger and does away with the strap arrangement for holding the swinging drawbar to the fixed drawbar.
To make this I needed:
2 x ¾-UNC x 4" Bolt, Grade 8
2 x ¾-UNC Nut, Grade 8
2 x ¾" Spring Washer
2 x ¾" x 1" Pipe (to use as spacers)
1 x ½ x 4 x 4" Angle x 31½" long
1 x ½" x 3½ Plate x 31½"
So far all seems very satisfactory. You can drill two holes in the angle and plate to fix the swinging drawbar in a given position.
The swinging drawbar setup is now very similar to Super AM arrangement.

What a GOOD-looking tractor. Bet you feel safer with those nice fenders on. I sure did when I finally got mine on.

That is a good idea. :)

Another one is to take ANOTHER U bar and weld it underneath the existing one to "double" the thickness of it.(That is what was done to mine by the previous owner to make it stronger. No breakage yet!)

Thanks! I wish I could take the credit for the idea, I just modified a later IH design. It is a straight tractor. It came all the way down from Queensland to me (Southern Victoria). It was a three day exercise bringing it home. It was on rubber, with 28" rear wheels, but I found a set of steel wheels for it. The fenders are new. Quite right, I did fit them when the steel wheels went on. The headlight bar and lights are recently fitted, but not connected yet.

One of my H drawbars has had the same doubled up treatment. I believe a lot of those drawbars were broken by manure spreaders with BIG loads on them. That happened here once when I was a kid. Broke the front cast mount under the belly too.

That is REALLY cool, will do that for my MH44. The swinging drawbar parts have been gone as long as I can remember.

Ah yes, we do that down here. I am sure that IHC meant for Farmall H and M tractors to be driven on the left of the road. The gear stick is on the left side of the driver, just like in our cars!
