M pto problem

I"ve got a problem with my M power take off. It seems to not fully engage with the input shaft in the rear end. When I engage it and it gets under load it grinds and slips unless I manually hold the lever up. It had been working, always slips now. Wondering if it"s wear or if I can add some thrust washers? Possibly lengthen the tube that engages the drive coupler? Anyone had to deal with this?

One thing for sure, once it starts jumping out of mesh, it will make a pattern on the splines and make it impossible to stay in gear. I am assuming you have the latest pto as there are three different set ups. Usually it is a matter of wear in the mechanism that shifts it into gear and it sounds like the problem if you can hold it engaged. You can make some slight modifications to that to get a little more engagement along with taking care of the worn loss of movement problems.

Take it apart & check for worn or loose parts.
Either point the tractor downhill or get a bucket under the rear end to catch the lube that will "escape".

I had this problem once, but mine was excessive end play. Someone had the PTO out at some point and dropped the thrust washer in the rear axle housing while removing it. The result was the PTO shaft moving back and forth during operation and working the clutch sleeve off the end of the countershaft. On a hunch, I purchased a new washer, but I didn't have the brains to check if the old one was still in there. It was. If your PTO is grinding while you're holding it engaged, you may have to change the clutch sleeve and hopefully not the countershaft.

I did have the assembly out at one point to replace the rear seal. I don"t recollect if I used it after that until late this summer. Where is the thrust washer located?

It's a pretty thick washer, I'd guess about 3/16", and it hangs on the pilot on the end of the PTO shaft. I suspect that during removal, it sticks to the end of the countershaft, then drops into the rear axle housing when the PTO shaft is withdrawn.
