i have a farmall m with a 540 pto and i want to know if i could change some thing to make the pto spin a 1000rpm insted of 540rpm i can put an adapter on the 540 so i could atach a 1000 shaft to it but the tractor will not spin it ast enough for the 1000pto implement is there a way to speed up the pto without runing the motor at redline. is there a gear some where that i could change?

Transmission gears are not changable to make that happen and still have usable ground speeds. They wouyld need to be made, and expensive. A geared adapter for 1:1.8 gear box (or so) would work, but be as expensive as trading the tractor, or using a different PTO driven equipment that matches 540. Jim

I see you with three choices hang a gear box of your current pto that'll speed up your out put, there are industrial gear boxes out there that are the approximate ratio you need but they were reducers so you'd have to run them backwards probably not good, you could mount the same thing on the implement but again you're turning the gear box backwards and that might be an issue. Either way it't probably cost you the same as your M is worth. Some implements were made to go ac/dc or 540/1000 might see if your is one and buy the kitt or the new driveline and hook it up. Might be cheaper and more feasible to trade the implement and $ or the M and and $s you'll need to make 1000 rpm pto happen for a tractor with 540/1000 pto and probably pick up live power and hydraulics along the way.

Hub City Gear makes the adapter. It is a slip on unit over your 540 shaft. Should find it at their site. I'll bet it is over $1000. It may take years to find it on eBay using "540 to 1000" search. I'd get another tractor. Maybe one that has both shafts like a 706 or similar. Newer tractors have PTO shafts that can be end-for-ended and make both speeds.

What 1000RPM PTO implement would an M have enough HP to run?

1000RPM is for equipment requiring >100HP to run.

Agree on changing the implement. On some is just replace the 1000 speed coupler with a 540 coupler and swap drive / driven pulleys or flip over a gear box. Check with the implement co.

The M was not designed for 1000 rpm. The lowest hp I have seen for a 1000 rpm PTO is about 70.

Hmm.. Have this recollection that the IH 454's had dual PTOs and the second shaft was 1000 RPM... don't recall ever seeing it hooked to anything though.

A 656 can be equipped with 1000rpm pto but it requires a lot of different internal gears from the 540 units. I don't know how fast the 9 speed in a M would spin the pto at rated engine speed but I think it would still be well below 1000rpm. Thing is on a M, the lower transmission shaft turns pto so if you want to increase pto speed you would have to increase that shaft and all speeds except fifth would increase close to two fold. So, it is not feasible.

Yep, my 454 has one above the other, and the shield can be moved.
But I never had any implements that need a 1000 RPM PTO.
