More magneto confusion ....

So I think I have found a replacement magneto for my Farmall A. The one a fellow has for sale is off a model H and we are talking on the phone. They're supposed to be the same and interchangeable right? Both have the H4 start to their serial numbers with 7 numbers (and no letter) following.

The one I have here rotates clockwise to trip the impulse. Now I know that "clockwise" can be confusing depending on which end of the mag a person is viewing from. I am saying "clockwise" while looking at the drive plate end of the magneto when off the tractor (or as it would be viewed from the front of the tractor if installed).

This guy says his H magneto turns counterclockwise to trip the impulse (looking from the drive plate end). The IHC magneto manual says clockwise but does not specify from which end of the magneto the view is from.

Anybody clarify once and for all exactly what is what with this puzzle? Maybe it's not a puzzle, maybe I'm the puzzle.

You go by which way the rotor rotates. Your plug wires are in this firing order:
2-1
4-3 As the rotor rotates CW. Hal

For both the A and H engines, the magneto viewed from the impulse end mag turns clockwise. (Also viewed from the cover end, the rotor button turns clockwise...)

Reversed rotation H4 mags are used only on diesels (MD, WD6, etc) and W9 gassers.

Here's a link that might tend to disagree with your stand on the terms clockwise or counter-clockwise (I do understand what you're saying though since it is what it is). Obviously, either term can only be used "understandably and without question" with reference to a position of observation, otherwise the terms are meaningless ....

You forgot it can also be turned counter-clockwise but the impulse dont catch. But installed in the engine it sure does rotate clockwise.
