IH 424 Electrical Problem

I have a 424 gas powered. In recent weeks the "amp" light on the dash started flashing red. I figured it was the voltage regulator because the generator is not too old. I replaced the regulator and the light is still flashing. The battery will need recharging every once in a while. The battery is also fairly new and does take and hold a charge. Any suggestions?

A flashing light indicates that the charging system is not operating correctly. Without being there here are two suggestions. (newish alternators can fail, especially "rebuilt" ones). First when it is running at 1/2 throttle, check the voltage across the battery posts. it should be 14.2 to 14.8 volts. If not, and it is about 12.4 or so the system is not charging at all. I would take the regulator and alternator to a auto parts store that will check them. If you are determined to repair/analyze it yourself, you will need the repair manual, or Delco diagnostic procedure from the internet. Jim

The easiest way to check your alternator is get
a hacksaw blade and touch it to rear bearing end
of alternator. If it has magnetism it is charging.
So look elsewhere for problem.

Hi Chip, sometime ago, John T posted an excellent Gen/VR trouble shooting guide.

Search the archives for it. If you can't find it, I know I stored somewhere on my laptop.

The light flashes because it has a flashing bulb. It is connected between the key switch and the Gen terminal of the regulator. If the generator is working the voltage from the A terminal of the generator arrives at the Gen terminal of the regulator and will close the contact in the regulator between the Gen terminal and the Bat terminal. When that happens you will have battery/charging voltage on both sides of the bulb and the light will go out. Trouble shooting the generator and regulator should locate your problem.

That only tells you that the rotor is magnatized. If the stator windings are bad or bad diodes it won't be charging.

Thanks all for the responses. I replaced the regulator and the light still flashes. I will take the generator to a rebuild shop and have it checked out. Thanks again.
