I have a Farmall super C that makes a lot of noise in 3rd and 4th gear. I was wondering if using a different weight fluid in the transmission might help out the noise. I currently have 90 weight in it. I would appericate any ideas, help on this issue. Running in all other gears is pretty quite.

Ive changed the input bearings on a few trannys and it did do a lot making the tranny quiet. Some are noisier that others but they are old and some have been used heavier than others.

if it has been a while since the case was drained, you might crack open the drain plug and let the goop drain out. water tends to accumulate in the case and it will be on the bottom.

May be the pot metal oil slinger gear has failed. They'll make a heck of a racket when that thing starts vibrating.

I had an oil slinger gear that broke such that the splined center stayed on the shaft and the rest was not attached to that center. It was an intermittent noise but when it caught you'd thing it was going to blow up.

Thank for all the replies and I was wondering if putting heavier weight gear oil may take out some of the noise. It is only making noise when in 3rd and 4th gear the other ones are quite.

Thank again

If you are in an area that never gets cold you could use 140w and it woulod probably quite it down a little. First I would check, after the tractor has been sitting severl days, open the drain plug and see if any water runs out. If it does, this could affect it as the water dilutes the oil to a thinner viscosity than it was. If so let all of the water drain then stop the plug and top off to proper level with new 90w or 140w if you are in warm area. Definirtely do not use 140 if you plan on operating tractor when it is cold weather.
