Lately my power steering has been sluggish.3 pt would raise and lower fine and the PTO would turn when engaged although i haven't had anything hooked to it.Decided to change the filter and fluid.i also pulled what i believe is the flow diverter spool on the bottom underneath the filter.there's 2 bolts i pulled both and cleaned them made sure i reinstalled correctly.everything looked fine.Power steering is the same.3 pt still goes up and down, chatters a little when going down and the PTO spins.I hooked a brush hog to it and it turns BARELY.if i raise the BH then engage the pto it will turn and after some time will get up to speed but dies right off when i lower it to cut.

After perusing thsi site for a while i upon someones recommendation to someone else i blasted air into the dipstick hole with everything running pto spinning and i pulled the larger bolt on the bopttom with it running till fluid came out.still nothing. whats next any ideas??thx

Hi, how was the filter and mesh filter when you changed filters? Was the mesh full of brake band crud? With the tractor running about 1300 RPMs check the transmission oil level. When you pull the remote outlet lever without any hoses attached to the remotes do you hear a buzzing noise?
I wonder if the the teeth have been chewed off the pressure plate that runs the PTO shaft and the PTO shaft runs the hydraulic pump. The PTO shaft will turn with no load but when load is applied the shaft slips in the pressure plate. There is an inspection plate in the bottom of bell housing that you can remove and take a look up at pressure plate and PTO shaft.

hi Jim,thx for the reply. The filter was black in color like the fluid but not any chunks or anything like that in it.The mesh was the same,no brake crud just some general crud, nothing too serious. When running the remotes i dont recall a buzzing i'll have to recheck tho to be certain.
If that plate was chewed and the pto couldn't run the pump would it still be able to drive fine and would the 3 pt still work fine? The steering was fine a week ago also. The fluid level is always hard to see but i pull it about 10 times to get a good idea.it looks fine but Should i add more just to make sure. When i changed the fluid i pulled both plugs on the bottom plus i had the flow diverter valve out and filter off.I only got out about seven gallons. Is this normal? Could the other 3 gallons be trapped in lines or the system somewhere or was it low to begin with even tho the stick said it was good? Thx in advance

Hi, re hydraulic fluid, the capacity is 9 gal but will not hurt to overfill by 5 gal. There are multiple chambers in the trans/diff and there is a small transfer pump in there to transfer hydraulic oil from one chamber to the other so hydraulic pump will not be starved of hydraulic oil when tractor is on a slope.
Re flow divider valve IIRC if it is stuck on the bottom then no PS and PTO but 3pt and remotes work, if stuck at top then no 3pt and remote but PS and PTO work.
Since 3pt works most likely PTO shaft splines are OK. Make sure PS has all the air out of the system by turning steering wheel max left then max right several times. If now PS then some quick checks, dead head the remote and listen for relieve valve buzzing, if no buzz then hydraulic pump is not putting out 2200 psi. Dead head remote while turning steering wheel, if PS works then flow divider stuck.

Hope this helps
