If I understand right the FWA setup on the M, or 400 is timed to 4th gear(from the belt pulley spot ) Question is, would the front axle from a 4x4 work to supply the driven front axle? What is used to supply the transition from the tractor to the new add-on drive shaft? I'd like to build one on an M.

A Mud Hog attachment from a combine or cotton picker would be the easiest, but I believe you would basicly end up with an interesting show piece or conversation piece, and not really a usefull attachment to your tractor.

Mount the MudHog hydraulic pump on the belt pulley. Of cource it will stop when you clutch the tractor so the pump will stop, but that would not matter since you would be stopped anyhow. The MudHog attachments were pretty well self contained so it should be a farirly easy project.

The hydraulic idea looks simpler on the surface but how do you provide the oil pressure? You sure aren't going to get any useful thrust out of the belly pump or even a live pump on an M.

There is a speacial "drop box" gear/chain case for those. They are next to impossible to find and probably very expencive. If you were creative I would imagine that you could rig up something to the pto.Steve

Pto will give you only one gear

The Elwood only operates in R, 1, 2, 3.

Ya, you could build an Elwood transfer case. That"s alot of work and it will only be worth scrap when done even if it works flawlessly.

Here are some pictures to get you started. It would be alot easier to attach right angle drives off both pinion shafts and run two drive shafts forward to a double differential steering Dana. I think I calculated 11.2 x 24 front rubber with the lowest ratio Dana 60. You will also have to install a locker on the IH differential. The B-450 had them. OTOH, maybe not so easy.

Or you could go hydraulic. Now that"s easy.

Now thats interisting!!! I like the hydraulic idea, never ever thought about that. I wish I could pick up a hydraulic drive off a combine, but that would be too easy and expencive.

There's one for sale on craigslist locally for $1,000 IIRC. Columbia/Jefferson City Craigslist. Search for a Mudhog, presumably the brand name.

You can buy a worn out combine at auction for less than you can buy parts, then scrap the leftovers for cash.
