Hello Gents,
= I have a Farmall A that starts fine, but is missing or running erratically. Then all of a sudden it smooths out and runs fine... Then under losad, it runs poorly again with no power. Then, out of nowhere it runs fine again... It seems to run worse under load. Is it timing? The governor seems to be working.... Any ideas?
Thanks,
Michael

I'd guess either fuel or ignition. If you have dirty or contaminated fuel in it it'll run rough when your in the bad stuff and straighten out when you get clean fuel to the carb. To correct empty your tank out and sediment bowl and refill with clean fuel. Might add Stabil or Seafoam if you're not going to burn that tank in a month or so. Not that I want to open up this can of worms again but fuel with ethanol added tends to absorb water and carry it to places in your fuel system were it does bad things, if it were mine and I wasn't using it regular enough to refill it once a month I'd use ethanol free gas. If it's an ignition problem it could be a loose connection somewhere, a bad bushing in your mag or distributor that causes erratic operation of the points or maybe something as simple as some funky stuff on the points that sometimes doesn't allow them to make good contact. The erratic operation of the points is in effect changing you timing at will. If the system is up to snuff incorrect timing will make it run bad all the time.

do not know. might replace wires and spark plugs. loosen gas line at carb., you should have a stream of gas the size of a pencil.

Sounds like you have some rust/dirt in the carb and it blocks the main jet at times then falls away again and unblocks it. But I would first test spark and make sure you have a good blue/white spark that jumps a 1/4 inch gap or more. Then I would pull the carb drain plug and let the fuel flow a couple minutes. Catch it so as to look for rust/dirt and water. If your carb is like the one on my BA it had the non-adjustable main jet with a plug covering it. Remove that plug and let fuel flow out of the man jet. If it does not flow out well then take a small wire etc and poke in it to open it up. Also when was the last time you dumped the dirt and water out of the air cleaner

Thank you for the advice. I will refuel and see if that helps.. And it makes sense what you say about the timing.
Thanks again,
Michael

I appreciate the advice and I will try removing the carb and cleaning it completely. I will also pull the plugs one at a time and check the spark..
Thanks again,
Michael

Before you get that extreme do the draining of the carb and do the main jet thing I said and you may find that is all it takes to fix your problem and that will save you a few hours work and down time

Does it have the the original mag or been changed to a dist. What is the compression and have the tappet been set. Pull all plugs lay them in order on the hood and check if they all look the same. Then new sparkplug wires then theres the fuel system easiest is pulling the plugs and compression it would be the cheapest and quick answer to the problem
