Super C Camshaft Gear and Distributor Drive Gear

Looks like I'll be replacing the camshaft gear and distributor drive gear. I kind of wonder why the teeth sheered. The hydraulic pump still works. What is the best way to support the engine to remove the front wheels? Can it be supported under the bell housing, or is that too far back?

Is the crankshaft gear damaged? A pallet jack would support the engine. I used jack stands on a Farmall A so I could roll the front wheels out. I set a 12 X 12 oak block under the drawbar
to keep the tractor from flipping backwards and I unbolted the engine and pulled it using a chain hoist. Hal

Yes you can support it under the bell housing. I have a stand on casters that bolt there so i can push the tractor around if needed.

The camshaft gear has portions of the teeth missing in the center portion of parts of the gear. The outer edges are okay, which is probably why it is still spinning and still works the pump. There is one part of it where the edge is missing pieces of 2 teeth.

I have several different types of pullers and have a torch for heat.

I"ll support it under the bell housing. Didn"t think about a block under the drawbar. Hopefully, I do not need to pull the engine though.

You don't need a block under the drawbar unless you're going to pull the engine. You don't need to pull the engine to replace those gears. You may be better off to pull the camshaft and have your local auto machine shop to remove the old gear using their hydraulic press and press the old gear off and the new gear on. The crankshaft gear and damper pulley isn't going to come off easily. Hal

The cam shaft gear will pull off fairly easy with a
a decent puller. The crank gear can be done as well
just not easy at all, lack of room etc. As El toro
says you may have to press the crank gear off. As
for why they went out, most likely 60 years of use.
I have done this on a few Super C, C's, and a Super
A. Last one I did was a C, did the exact same thing
as yours did but took the pump gear with it as well.

You may need a puller like this Cub damper puller using a bottle jack or hydraulic ram to get the damper off. Hal

You dont need to pull the crank pulley if you are just pulling the cam gear. If you need to change the crank gear thats different. I have that gear if you need one.

I"m kind of thinking the crank gear is damaged as well, but I haven"t got to it yet.

I was wondering how to pull the damper off. Hope I don"t get stuck on it trying to figure out a puller.

I was hoping I could just pull the cam gear and heat the new one and slide it on. I have done this with flywheel teeth. Put them in the oven for 30 minutes at 350.

Thank you for the information. Should have done more on it tonight, but it is getting dark so early.

Use a split bearing separator behind the damper pulley and pull from it. This is so you don't break the damper pulley. Hal

I just installed a cam gear in a super c this spring. What I found was that I could not get the gear back on the cam still in the tractor. If you try to force it on you will push the expansion plug behind the cam out of the engine block. Save yourself some trouble and remove the cam, press the gear off. Freeze the cam and press new gear back on.
