Super A start problem

I had my 51 Super A out a couple of days ago. I ran it for 30 or so minutes and put it up. I had no problems at all. I went out today to use it and would not crank (i might have heard a "thud"). I checked the battery and cables and they were fine. I went ahead and switched out batterys with my car that and the same thing, nothing. I then noticed the smell of burning wires and they were hot. I also tried tapping on the starter. Finally I grabbed my hand crank and made sure it was in neutral and I can't budged it a bit. I also tried rocking it back and forth in 4th gear and that didn't help either. Any ideas? I need to get it running by the weekend.

Pull starter, I had that happen on a W-4 starter hung up on ring gear. Same exta thing only happened that one time, same starter still.

Yeah I thought about doing that. Never done that before. Do I just unbolt it and pull straight off? Should I try to see if it spins off? How do I reposition it so it still won't be stuck when I put it back on?

When the starter hangs up, it is usually a sign of a bad starter drive. Pull the starter, take it to a good shop and have them install a new drive, bushings and brushes. You'll be suprised at how much better it will work. My Super C used to do the same thing, finally gave up and did the above - wish I'd have done it when it first started to act up. Just nobolt the starter ive never had much luck rocking the tractor i just take the mounting bolts out. Now for a permantnt fix get the starter refreshed new bruches, bearings and drive. When the starter is removed check the ring gear for bad spot mite need to split and replace the ring gear. If it isnt totaly ruined you can just reverse the ring gear. Bad connections and weak starters contribute to the ring gears getting ground off.
