Farmall M bell housing filled with oil residue and old oil

split my M last night thinking my rear main was bad causing all kinds of oil in bell housing but to my surprise it didnt look to bad behind the flywheel, could it have been the hydraulic pump causing all the residue? front tranny seal doesnt look bad nor does the shaft that turns the pump. on another thought how do I tell if the pressure plate is bad? should I change the seal because I have it split even though it doesnt look like it was leaking? let me know your thoughts. Thanks in advance

What did you have to keep refilling?

Whatever that was, is what was leaking.

If you had to keep putting oil in the hydraulic reservoir, it was that.
If you had to keep putting oil in the engine, it was that.
If you had to keep putting oil in the transmission, it was that.

great thought but I just purchased the tractor and the clutch was slipping under a load so that is why i took it apart. never ahd to add oil to anything on the tractor i havent had it that long.

If the clutch is slipping, either you need to adjust the clutch pedal free travel, or the clutch disk is just flat worn out.

I would change all the seals if you split it, including the rear main. The housing on my H was so caked with oil, I had to have it boiled. You should also inspect the shafts and see if they need speedy sleeves.

I would replace the seal and clutch. So you don't need to split that tractor again. Oil getting on the clutch disc may be causing the slip or you're down to the rivets. The flywheel may need refacing. Hal

Keep in mind a S L O W leak over Several years can cause that kind of accumulation you are describing. Mine was a REAL mess in the clutch are due to a trans seal with a slow leak that had been leaking for years!!!!! (13-15 gallons of gear grease can go a LONG way before being detected as LOW in the rear.

BTW,DO check the level in your tans.
