52 Super M raking into gears from stop

My old 52 Super M has developed a problem......when its cold, it shifts into gears perfectly.....after you've used the tractor a while, it starts wanting too rake going into gear from a dead stop with the clutch in. I stop with the clutch in, let everything stop moving, spinning, etc. and put it into a gear......it rakes into gear really bad.

It acts too me like the clutch isnt disengaging all the way.
There is freeplay in the clutch pedal...about 1-1/8".
The clutch does not slip while pulling at all in any gear!.
Any ideas?

Trans oil getting thin when warmed? Not slowing the gears as much as when it's cold?

... might be kind of a stretch, but maybe.

What do you use for gear oil?

thought about that more - probably more likely the level's low and after the oil gets slung around, there's less on the bottom slowing the gears?

sorry - still guessing because I've got nothing better to do at the moment!

With it not running, push in the clutch all the way. Put it in neutral, and (keeping the clutch down) start it. If it grinds into gear in this test, it is having issues.
The pilot bearing may need grease. The clutch disk could be warped.
The shaft splines with a new clutch can cause the plate to drag.
The driven disk could be coming apart.
Easiest first.
If the test doesn't grind. check trans fluid level. and or refill with 85-140 gear oil. Jim

Both good guesses.....I'll check those when I get home Friday.
Thats what it acts like....as the oil get warmer and thinner, the grinding starts too get worse.

What is "rake going into gear?"

I did a lot of raking when I lived on the farm. In fact I did some last summer, about 15 acres with a tandem rake hitch. Never raked going into gear. Always was in gear when raking, except when I shifted into another gear.

Yes, I pretty much figured he meant grinding, but I am curious as to where the term "raking" comes from in this context.

Raking into gear (from my life in northern indiana) ment dragging the shifter lever into the gear slot perforce with no consideration if the tooth speed matched. Grind me a pound was a common back seat comment. Just rake it into gear, we havent got all day. another comment when a newbe was feeling the teeth go by for 30 seconds. Transmissions suffer, and always will when haste or inexperience rule. Jim

As others have pointed out, there could be a few different causes. Anyway, I have the same issue with an old Farmall h that I picked up last year. I simply run with the belt pulley engaged at all times. Having it engaged provides a little extra drag which helps somewhat, but what is most helpful is that I have a great visual indicator to look at in the belt pulley itself. Never try to shift gears when that pulley is still spinning or you get loud grinding. Wait until you visually see that the belt pulley has stopped completely and all will be okay with shifting gears.

Not a perfect fix I do readily admitt, but there are only so many hours available to fix things for us part time hobbyists anyway. I intend to get to the root problem eventually when time permits - sigh sigh as I have no idea when I will find the time.
