Looking up IH Parts - need help

I have been wondering for a long time if there is a way to look up IH parts by the part number. When I run across miscelanous items with an IH part number, I want to know what they are......sometimes I post on here to find the answer, but it would be a lot easier and less clutter here if I could just do a search by the part number. The CASE/IH site doesn't seem to support part number search from what I can find UNLESS you know what type of machine/implement the part came off of. That is my problem though....I don't....and I want to find out.

THANKS!

Another thought......it would also be handy and nice to know if the particular part was used with different models of tractors or implements. By searching with the part number, that could be achieved. Surely there is a way to do this that I just haven't figured out yet. I'd hate to be posting a hundred posts up here titled "What is this".

Some dealers' Web sites (like Messick's) let you do a CIH search by
parts number. On their site when you click on "parts diagrams"
right below the search-by-model box is a search-by-part-number
box.

Tried it, however it didn't recognize the part number. It actually thought I was tryping a description since I included the "R1". JUST MY LUCK! haha.

Here goes.....I reckon I'll just post it up here in a new topic.

Yea, ANOTHER problem is most of these old IHC numbers have been updated at least 2-3 times from what the original number was back in the day. When I go to the dealer to have stuff looked up,without failure they keep"crossing"numbers up to the newer ones.

Hmmm.....maybe I should just call the dealership and let them look the part numbers up?? This seems to be the only choice.....unless I just start picking random machines/implements I "THINK" the part came off of. Then I could search by part number on the CASE/IH site. haha.

We are lucky CaseIH has made the things that are online available. Evidently they have chosen to reserve any general parts lookup capabilities for the dealers. Not to speak for them, but is a capability their normal customer base rarely needs. The dealers can go online to look up parts numbers, but it isn't the sort of thing that usually generates sales. So don't expect anyone to do it for you unless you have a good friend on the other side of the counter.

There is a huge amount of data that is stored and has to be accessed to find where a part number is used (may be part of the reason they don't give public access). Even back in the mid-'90s, the CaseIH where used took over 100 pages of microfiche. I can't imagine how many feet of books it would take. This was AG only, no truck etc. numbers.

For most people, posting it here is probably the best (maybe only) way to get a part IDed. Somebody may recognize a part and be able to tell you, with or without a part number. At the least, somebody may be able to identify the type machine. For example, if somebody says it looks like a planter part, you might be able to find it by checking 3 or 4 planter books. Face it, if you aren't willing to check 3 or 4 books, you don't want to know that badly. If you post here, don't withhold information. Tell us everything you do know. Here are some tips on getting help:
- Post a picture, include something in the photo so people know what size it is (like a 12-inch ruler!).
- Include the part number, even a partial of the first few digits may help. Be sure to include the letters. 12345D and 12345R1 are different parts!
- Tell us about guilt by association. "It was in a box of grain drill parts." says a lot more than "It was in a box of parts." It may not be a related part, but if it is it may help someone ID it.
- Finally, just be civil and just ask your question. If you start with a long gripe about what you can or can't find online, of how a guy at the dealer blew you off, other people are likely to blow you off too then go read somebody else's post. After all, looking up a part number requires some effort. Don't annoy people when you are asking for a favor.

Thanks so much Jim! Like I said....I've got a few more peices that I just can't seem to identify. I just downloaded the pictures... I'll post them here, all the while i will also be doing a little research myself.

CNH has a different way of thinking on parts versus IH, they dont want to give any clue on commonality of high volume parts, like after market mfg to say well we can sell this cheaper if it fits that many models, most dealers would give you this info if you would just ask politely. They change part numbers via sub to newer parts, many times its the contract cost issue or different vendor to keep track of different batchs of parts.
