I drained the engine oil out of my M about 6 months ago before I began restoring it. In order to protect the rings and sleeves, should I shoot some engine oil in the spark plug holes before I turn it over the first time?

Most definitely. I usually pull the spark plugs and crank it for a good 30 seconds before attempting a start.

I would not use oil to do that I would use ATF it will clean out the rust that will be in there and un-stick the rings better then engine oil will

ATF or also known as automatic transmission fluid. ATF is a light oil that has a lot of cleaning additives to it and it eats carbon and rust and frees up sticking parts better then most penetrating oils do. There was a study done and ATF came out as one of if not the top penetrating type oils. I keep a pumper oil can full of the stuff and use it a lot. It can also be used in place of MMO and cot a lot less and works as good or better just does not smell as good

Thank you! I even happen to have some ATF on the shelf. Just didn't think of automatic transmission fluid. I will take your advice and put a couple of squirts in each cylinder. I imagine I'll get a bit of smoke at first.

Old, I took your advice on using atf as a penetrating oil and now I use it in a pumper can CONSTANTLY!! I would have never believed that it would work as well as it does. Not to mention, its a lot less money than a big can of PB Blaster or WD-40. Thanks. You've saved me a he!! of a lot of money with a few nifty tips n tricks. Thanks!!!

Well that is why I am on here a lot to help and if I need help to get help. Funny thing is that when I first started posting about ATF many people told me I was wrong but now after 10 plus years seems that people have learned to use it as I have

I buy a lot of old dead tractors and when I get them I fill the cylinders with ATF and let them sit a day or 2. Most after doing that and all the other small stuff come back to life with little to no work so to speak
