H-4 Magnetp

I finally got my H-4 magneto in working order and wanted to get it back on my 1944 W-4, and get it running again, but this was not the case. I followed the manual for timing the engine and the magneto but I think something is not right. I set the engine to TDC on the #1 cylinder on compression stroke. After this I set the magneto so the rotor was pointing at the #1 cylinder pin. The issue is they do not line up at all, when I try and put the magneto back on the tractor. Was puzzles me is that this tractor did run. I simply took the magneto off so that I could rebuild it and get rid of the external coil. Simply put I am lost and do not know where to begin, can anyone help me?

I deleted my answer, I haven't timed a mag in several years and said to turn the coupling end the wrong way. The operators manual says otherwise. Pete is correct.

Turn magneto backwards to nearly line up number one. If you go a little too far you will get on windup side of impulse so just turn it around again to (close to number one). If it is timed correctly internally it will go right on then do you fine timing so it trips just slightly after tdc. Not before.

You probably got the rotor out of time with the tower. It needs to be lined up with the tower when it impulses. you can move the gears to get the rotor so it lines up on the tower when it impulses. You also need to make sure both valves are closed on #1 to make sure you are on TDC.

The rotor drive gears inside the magneto have timing marks. One gear has marks for Right and Left. Use the "R". If they weren't lined up when it was assembled, fix it before going on. If that is OK, you need to install the magneto on the engine using the instructions in your owners manual. The instructions will work if you follow them EXACTLY. Pay attention to every if and but and comma. If it says turn the drive backwards, don't try to turn it forward to the same place. If it says to stop and scratch your butt, stop and scratch your butt. The instructions will work.
