A lot of Folks didn't like them, when pulled hard they "hop" or "dance" a bit. Only guy I knew that bought one new loved it and it was his first Farmall in a while, they had been doing the MF thing.

They had the same problems as the conventional IH tractors of that era, a few extra related to the articulating joint and a light front axle.

The advantage was they were manuverable and had terriffic traction with minimal added weight.
They were intended to be a high speed, high traction row crop tractor.
Many folks who had problems were trying to make them do a heavy tillage tractors work, when they were really not built for that kind of work.

I had a 3788, loved it. Much less engine noise in the cab with that engine way out front and mounted on rubber. No need for front weights with that 466 engine hanging way out in front.
With rear and big front fuel tank, fuel capacity was near or over 100 gallons.

The power hot is always a problem with a four wheel drive tractor. That is one thing the guys with the quad trac rigs really appreciate getting away from. If front tries to out pull rear they jump like a rabbit. The two plus two is a different animal. You have to really want one. They work great in soft ground where your two wheel drive digs in. Way too many guys put dual wheels on and tried to use them as a big horse. They were not. You already had four large tires on the ground. One thing nice, rear tracked front so that big long looking rig actually came around in pretty good shape. You could drive them or back them into a spot real easy once you took that into consideration. Hydraulics would be at the top of my list for problems.

Had a neighbor who had one and was taking it in to get shifting problem fixed pretty early on and all 4 tires locked on main street. However, we had a 3788 and never had any issues that I remember except oil cooler failure mixed the oil and water.

Really...? So I guess that isn't a new problem for Navistar/IH? (6.0 Ford Powerstroke owner here. Had the same problem, which resulted in blown head gaskets).

Back when the 2+2 was new, my buddy's dad got one and had a lot of steering problems. They eventually got it sorted out, and I believe he still has it.

Time and again, I have read that most of the problems with the 2+2 tractors were caused by farmers trying to use them like 300HP Steigers instead of the 130-170HP MFWD tractors they were designed to replace.

I was working in the shop at an IH dealership when the 2+2 was in its hay day. The guys that had fluid in the front tires, and or put duals on the front axil had problems from the front axil to the rear end. The guys who only dualed the rear and treated them like a 1486 had good luck. IH used a belly mounted piston pump that wasnt the best but the aftermarket companys eliminated that problem. Good engine, most ran around 5000 hours. There is a steering valve in the pivot with four hoses on it, two in, two out, I never understood what it was for, but if you bypass the valve the steering is faster and doesnt wonder as much. Hood latch was poor, some wouldent open and outher customers ran over the hood going across the field. The pph hyd. system has caused lots of problems over the years but you can get a kit to convert it back to the old open center system if worst comes to worst. The 3788 has the same poor three speed trans and outboard planetary axils as a 1586, but the 3388 and 3588 were prety good tractors in our area.
