Adjusting pto shaft length on #5 JD sickle bar

All PTO shafts must be free to slide in and out. either at the joints, yoke, or mid shaft. if yours is not, replace it. If it is stuck, free it. it will break parts (expensive parts) if it will not telescope at least 6 inches in either direction from mid position, when attached and running straight ahead. Jim.

I have a No.5 I run on SH. The shaft telesopes fairly easy. Check to see if it's stuck. There is also a type of clutch built in to it.

When the No.5 is mounted on a Farmall it takes a longer pto shaft. Found this out when I was young. Dad bought a No.5 on an auction. It had been mounted on a JD A. We switched the hitch from the old one we had on to it be the pto shaft would just barely reach. We had to rebuild and swap the pto shaft off the old mower onto it. The Farmall shaft was about 6 inchs longer.
