Super M upper bolster seal

How does one change the oil seal on the upper bolster pivot shaft? (The one that keeps your gear oil from running down the pivot shaft). Does shaft have to come all the way out? Can it be dropped part way?
How do you remove and re-install seal? From parts photo looks like installed from bottom of casting. Any info appreciated.

Yeah, but it's fun. Jack up the front end and remove the wheels and shaft. Then buy a few of the seals. (You'll see why shortly.) Then you got two choices. Go to the oldest guy at your Case-IH dealer, and ask to borrow the old IH seal puller. No luck?
OK, youhave to invent your own seal puller. You have to gently pull the seal in from the bottom. I built a gizmo out of all-thread, various sizes of sockets, washers, nuts, duct-tape, what-all, that pulled the seal in and centered the seal in the bottom of the opening. Then I cranked on a nut on top, and slowly pulled the seal in from the bottom; NOTE: The U-shape faces up, so the oil/grease fills in the U-shape.
I crushed the first seal, I bent the second seal, and third time was Charm. I then whipped up 50-50 blend of 90 wt. and red wheel bearing grease, and poured tdhat in for an oil. I'd never done this sort of thing in my ife, but it worked great.

carter and gruenenwald (sp?) sells the complete kit to rebuild the bolster. has upper and lower bushings, lower bearing, seals and steering shaft bearing, bushing and seal.

Their kit does not have the bushing and seal for the worm shaft, but they stock those items also.

Thanks for all the info. Especially about ordering extra seals and making your own puller.local Case/IH is now Kubota.

I had the bolster off and just knocked the seal out with a screwdriver, I think, and hammer or something else I could hit with a hammer. Despite the way it looks, place the new seal in place and use a socket and long extension(s), then tap it with a hammer. Mine went in on first try.

Make sure and check the bushing clearances while the seal is out. I am sure it is worn and will need replacing.

I replaced that seal when I rebuilt my M and installed power steering. I must have damaged it while installing because it leaked all the oil out after I had it all put back together. I did not want to take it all apart again, so I just filled the gearbox up with grease. Works just fine as far as I can tell.

What works best is a seal driver that pilots well up into the bushing and the shoulder for driving or pulling the seal into place is just a few thousands of an inch smaller than the outside diameter of the seal. Many variations of how you want to go from there. I have a one piece tool that I just tap seal in from below. By the way, most installed seals, even those that don't leak are damaged due to improper installation.
