I've got a 1952 Farmall H that I want to do a tractor ride with this weekend. The total distance will be 20 miles in 5th gear. [b:e07787fe09]Anyone have an idea how much fuel I'll burn on my trip?[/b:e07787fe09]
Thanks!

Not a whole lot, maybe a couple or three gallons is my guess. In
5th you won't be able to go much under 10 MPH so you won't be
more than 2 hours on the road at low RPM or maybe 1 hour 20
minutes if you were going at 15 MPH at say 3/4 throttle or more.
This is just my ignorant opinion, since I have never gone that far on
the road.

Really not too much I would say arround 5 to 6 gallons. I do a
hay ride every fall with my 45 H and go about that distance on
very little fuel. Though i do start with atleast 10 gallons just
ro be safe always plenty left when done.

Best to have a full tank as that should get you by If you will be running wide open fifth gear for twenty miles which i doubt it will take about a hour or so but thinking more like two two and a half hours as you can only go as fast as the slowest tractor.

I would guess it burns 2 GPH, 16MPH so about 3 gallons. The
tank should be good for about 8 hours.

Way back in the early 70's I hauled corn to town in the fall 7 miles one way with a Deere A. 350 bushels loaded going to town and two empty wagons coming home. Did it that way for three cold falls. The mileage was about 5 MPG. On a very good day I could make four trips and I did it for ten days per year so I went through a fair amount of gas. Just a guess but you might get 7 MPG with your H with no load? Your H in high gear is geared about like a car in first or second gear. Jim

I'd about fill it to the top. You should only need 2 or 3 gallons. But if it's about a 1/4 of the way full and you go up a big hill you will run out... You don't want to find out the hard way...

I drove my H in the Great Eastern Iowa Tractorcade in June over a distance of 160 miles and burned 16 gallons of gas; 10 miles per gallon. The motor was running...some idling, some very slow travel, some faster running...for a total of 16 hrs; burning one gallon her hour.

If you are only going for 20 miles, your H can almost run that on the fumes.

Thanks for the info, guys. Someone on this site always knows. It has been a lot of help so far...

I never said I wouldn't fill it, but I was wanting to know how much it would burn. I'll be putting 10+ gallons in it.

Hi Lowell, Your travels of 160 miles that you just mentioned sound quite interesting . Next trip you might make it all the way to Nova Scotia with your "H"??? We just returned from a trip to the Niagara Region of Ontario, good travelling all the way. 1950 kl from our yard to Buffalo/Niagara area. Cheers, Murray///// Keeping up to date when you post information on your plow, still haven't got started on mine.

You will be lucky to run 5th gear on a tractor ride. From what I have read and heard you will be behind some slow JD that can only do about 8 mph. It will be a little too fast for 4th gear and a little too slow for road gear.

I know you wanted to know how much you will burn, but just about every tractor built during the period of H's/M's/8N's/Super C's were designed to run wide open for at least 8 to 10 hours (a work day) without refueling...how far can you go in 9 hours at full throttle? Now figure how far is the trip? 6th grade math...huh? Bobinva

I have a stick of old lathe for a gas gauge that I keep with the tractor so I always measure the tank in inches rather than gallons. I made the 18 mile run between my place and my Dads place numerous times over the years with a SC , SM , and SHs , always wide open in high gear on paved roads with hills and stop signs. None of those tractors ever used more than 1 - 2 inches out of the tank. An H is really easy on gas unless you are working it hard .

Murray, how you doing? I'll be near Kitchener, ON next week seeing how you Canadians do serious competition plowing. In my area when we have a plow day we just drop the plow in the ground and go. That IPM will be an education for me!

When I was growing up in the late 50's early 60's we used 8/n's,600,800 fords and a farmall 400 gas.To get a hard 12 hour day, they would all have to be filled up 3 times. The 800 ford and the 400 farmall would burn about 5 gallons per hour doing tillage work, which obviously is totally unlike a parade.

Just fill it up before the start. If you try and skimp and put in only the amount you think you need, sooner or later you will run out of fuel just before you get to the end of a ride. JMHO. Harold H
