Starter

Hello Folks; Another question about "C" starting difficulty. The tractor is 6volt, positive groud, with a push button ignition. When the ignition is pushed in, the engine begins to turn over but then the starter cuts out. If I relesse the ignition switch and press in again the same thing happens. Thanks for bearing with me.

Are you saying the engine starts to turn over then the starter releases and the starter "runs away"? If the engine turns over once the engine should crank. You either have a problem with fuel, compression, or ignition. These old engines are very easy to crank if tuned properly. I doubt you have a major problem with the starter if the engine turns over at all. Fix the other issue of tuning first. It could be a worn flywheel ring but I believe you have other problems that need attention first.

Maybe a bad switch or a starter going bad. Best way to know for sure is pull the starter off and take it to you local auto parts store and they can check it for you and 99% of them do it for free

Push button? The As, Bs, and Cs all used a saddlemount switch with a rod that you pull.

Terminology is everything, Not a flame at all, trying to help, but ignition is (on a C) is a round button that is pulled out to run and in to stop. The starter switch that makes the starter spin the engine is either a push rod, or pull rod, or possibly a big push button, pushed directly. If the ignition (small) button is pulled out, and the starter switch rod is pushed or pulled (or big button pushed) the starter will crank the engine (turning over with the starter) an engine is not started until it runs without the starter. If the engine starts a little, one cylinder fires, the starter motor will kick out to avoid self damage. If the tractor is having difficulty with carbon on plugs that is the reason the starter stops turning the engine. but the engine does not continue to run. Fix the running issue and I think all is well. Jim

Sounds about right when a 6 volt system is in need of some attention. 6 volt systems have to have large gauge cables, clean connections and a good battery to turn over the motor.Anything less and you have problems turning the motor like you described.

So what else have you goofed up as they used a saddle sw you pulled with battery positive cable fastened there. You say a push button sw so something is also messed up or it would start. You must have the wrong starter or you couldnt have a push button to start as original had a button for the sw to make contac and you pulled a rod.

Sounds to me like a starter drive problem.Perhaps drive gear is worn excessively,and/or weak drive spring,makes starter "Kick out" before engine starts.Old Ford bugaboo.

C is bad to lose ground. make sure you have a good ground. probably need to ground battery to starter bolt.
