Lack of power, soot on spark plugs

Hello Folks. I am hoping to get information and advice to correct the following problems with a Farmall "C" (six volt battery, positive ground). The tractor loses power quickly under load, Is hard to start, and the spark plugs foul with dry black soot even after a short time running. All help is appreciated, Thanks in advance.

Well first off make sure you have a good blue/white spark that will jump a 1/4 inch gap or more. Then check your oil bath air cleaner and make sure it is not all full of water or dirt and also make sure the up pipe is not full of dirt dobber nests. Next pull the tube from the air clean to the carb and make sure the air area of the carb is not sitting full of gas. If you find the air intake full of gas you may have a bad float of sticking float and that would cause it to run rich. I do not know if that carb has a main jet adjustment screw but if it does and you have checked every thing else you might adjust that screw in a turn or 2. The problem you have sounds like it is running way to rich but any of the things I said can cause that to happen

old has it well stated. I will ad that if you see dark grey/black sooty smoke out the exhaust, it is rich. Another check on a plugged up air cleaner is to run it with tha intake hose off. If it cleans right up, and runs well, the issue is in the air cleaner. A sinking float (leaking gasoline into it) can also do the deed. Jim
