Hello. Changed my points that were worn and condenser now the tractor runs erratic. like every once in a while a miss. they are set at .020 like the book. all wires are pushed in tight. I cleaned the new points before installing. Any ideas? Thanks Jerry

why not go through the complete tune up.
check compression , adjust valves, read plugs regap or replace, points and condenser done, check dist block for wear.check plug wires.set timing. check and clean fuel filter and bowl.check carb adjustment or clean as nessesary.
a few more things to do.

Take your timing lite when the engine is running at lower rpms and hook the pickup for the lite from one wire to the next and watch the fire pattern and you will probably see bad firing meaning a worn shaft in the dist.

It ran good before the points change,in the last year it has new wires, cap and rotor, fuel filter cleaned and new plugs, when I changed the points the old points where set a .013 , Do you think that has anything to do with it?

Yes, you changed the timing by changing the point gap. The .020 is the correct setting, but you are too advanced now.

Does he have a mag or battery ignition????

I think .013 is correct for a mag(do not have a book with me)

Yes, 0.013" for a magneto, 0.020" for battery ignition.

The problem is that the owners manuals give 0.013" as the point gap, because when the manuals were printed, all Hs had magneto ignitions.

OP says it run good at.013 before he messed with it which is why I questioned the mag.

He put the new ones in at .020 per his manual and now it runs poorly.

It ran good before I messed with it. The points looked worn so I replaced them. I just adjusted the points to .013 and it starts better, but still is running rough. I think I will put in the old condenser and see what happens.

Are you SURE the plug wires are in the proper locations????

As said above, do a COMPLETE tune up.
