Head to air intake canister question

the distillate head im using had a tube that went from the gas tank end of the head to the air intake conister but my M does not have this, do I need to hook that tube up for the distiallate head to work properly? thanks for the help, anthony

It is a vital part of the crankcase ventilation system. It needs to be there. That other head SHOULD have had it also.
 
The hole in front & back of the head connected to a tube above the rocker arms and then exited to the air cleaner; this passagetis like a PCV system on newer engines. It helped remove blow-by gasses from the crankcase thereby lessening the formation of sludge, etc. in the oil pan. The front hole attaches to the governor cover that sits at an angle.
 
that makes complete sense now Wayne, when I pulled the engine apart there was all kinds of sludge built up around the push rods...I wont allow that to happen on my new engine.
 
Didn't you say the M had a 400 or 450 head on it. No hole in the back of those heads is the reason you didn't have it. On those a opening in the top of the valve cover used a connecting line to the air inlet pipe. No overhead line under the valve cover also, just a short riser pipe in the front 1/4 inch pipe thread hole.
