What can be done to up the HP on an M? Son IN Law wants to do some pulling and was asking if I knew what ws available.

Rick

that is a very opened question... First is an
overbore kit with 4" dome pistons, second if it has
a distillate of kerosene head get a gas head, the
list goes on and on. what is your budget and what
classes are you looking to pull? Type in Farmall M
into the archives on the pulling forum and you will
get back hundreds of answers.

I'm asumming you have the 248ci block. You can freshen up the engine with new sleeves and high compression pistons, plane the head and have the valves reworked. If your m is tired that will give it quite a boost.Oh a flashy new paint job will increase the HP also. LOL Hope this helps Kent

Dome or step head pistons (all kits come 4" overbore i believe) and a Farmall 450 head and your on the right track. I believe that the 450lp manifold gives even more hp too, I know you can buy them new and it says that it increases hp on gas engines. The head swap is an old pullers trick, had one on mine but just found out its cracked. Best of luck, let us know how it turns out. ~Anthony

He wants to pull in the local tractor shows. He watched his brother pull a dead stock H at the Dalton MN show this past weekend. In his class there were a lot of tractors that were hopped up and PeeWee couldn't really compete.

The M in question runs good, is not an oil burner and has about the power it should. Would be an easy restore. New tranny input seal, new rubber, paint and decals.

I can watch for a 450 head and manifold. If he goes with the high compression pistons is he going to have to run much higher octane?

Thanks

If you get much above 170-190psi with the M you need
mid grade or better, otherwise your going to ping

Yep,

If ya wanna ruin a damn good tractor, start getting into that game and you'll have a pile of scrap in no time at all. :>)

Allan I agree. Not into pulling myself at all. But he has an M and he wants to do it. And yes I've talked with him and told him what can happen and even showed him vids from Youtube of tractors blowing up on the track. He's a good kid, hard worker, good husband and father....just not the brightest crayon in the box. He get an idea in his head and that's it. Gotta have a 1 ton diesel, lifted and chipped, blowing black smoke to be a man kinda mentality. I keep telling him that he has proven himself to be a man by his actions both as a father/husband and a worker.

So if he needs help with his latest idea I'll help him, like I say he's a really good guy.

I have played this game before . Yea ya can do a lot with a M , BUT the money involved is gotten out of hand . It can be done on the cheap side BUT not with a Farmall The best yo can do on the cheaper side is by going with a S/M block and put a set of High alt. pistons and a 450 head not the LP head Put bigger valves have the cam reground a 450 manifold a little carb work and gov. work a little dist recurve and ya might make 100 Hp. after that your talking a deeper check book. The cheapest pulling tractor that we built was a MM U and for two years dominated the 4500 -7500 div three in my area. It was built with almost all junk parts Two junk broken blocks 4 used cummings 855 sleeves four used farmall M rods two junk 4210 MM heads used John deere valves four used Allison pistons A junk crank welded up and offset ground crank a reground cam a new Bendix huge up draft carb one of my recurved dist. a set of half wore out 16.9x38 Firestone deep treads . We had a monster . it did not matter who was setting in the drivers seat it was a out the gate everytime but on that that happened on her first pull on the third run with me in the seat . The holley fuel pump locked up at about the 285 foot mark with a full head of steam and got hit in the donkey by the sled and shoved to the 290 foot marker and still won the class.

Funny pulled a M with a stock 450 gas engine with just head work and a reman gov never broke a thing. It's when you really up the HP things start to brake. It was a middle of the pack tractor better then the wore out tractors but not as strong as the tractors pulling stock classes with lots of CI in the tractor. Those are the tractors that win or brake trying.
