SM has a miss...what to do?

So my SM has I guess what I would call a miss. For the longest time I thought it was just the muffler; it has a Stanley aluminum muffler that has a very different sound than all my other tractors. Finally got around to looking into it, and the sound is still there even with a new muffler. I adjusted the valves and checked compression: 120-130PSI on all cylinders but the plug for #2 was wet with oil. What now?

Can I run a hotter plug? It has D18Y in it now so I could go up to a D21 right? If I do that, do I run the hotter plug in all cylinders or just #2? I can leave the tractor sit until I can afford major repairs if needed.

Thanks for the help.

If you can borrow a borescope light take a look inside No2 cylinder. Look for heavy deposits of carbon in the head. The last vehicle that I had that fouled plugs was a 1966 Mustang with the 200cid engine. We had bought it for our daughter used and only had 46k miles, but she couldn't handle a stick shift so my wife wanted it. I borrowed a borescope light at work and I had never seen so much carbon buildup. I pulled the head and the pistons. The rings were so full of carbon they were stuck. We did a valve job on it and with new rings and rod bearings it ran like a new car. Bought the parts from Sears catalog that was in 1971. I sanded the car and spot primed it and had a local body shop to paint it. Looked like a new car. Hal

kid, How much do you run it? Do you work it hard?
I would put in new D18 and work it. If it happens again Try D21 Or change to autolite and see if that is better. Plugs are cheep compaired to engine work. oldiron29

What is the history behind this machine?? Has it ever sat for say 6 months or more?? Me I would do a few things. #1 pour some ATF in that cylinder and let it sit a day or 2. #2 I would go with a set of auto lite plugs that would match the D-21. #3 I would run say 1qt ATF to 3-5 gal of gas to help clean and lube things up and then see how it does. Could be as simple as carbon build up or a sticking ring or some other such small thing

Been in the family now for about 5 years total; I personally have had it for probably 2. I tinker on it and take it for joy rides...play around in the neighbors field in the fall with a 12' disc and 3 bottom plow butnot enough to consider it worked hard. I keep up maintenance but have no other history. It sits a fair amount but I try to get it out and run at least once a month. Will try the ATF with some Autolite plugs. Thanks!

Sure wouldnt be the first time a hotter plug was used in one cycl. Depending on the use that could make the problem go bye bye as your compression isnt bad.

Sold the Mustang to one of those idiots that has a Doctorate and he more or less trash it. I forgot I put a clutch in too. Bought a Mercury Bobcat used after that and it had the V6 engine. My wife complained about it when gave it a little throttle it would make the rear tires squeal some. Some kid bought and he was happy as a pig in slop when the tires squealed. I bought used cars from 1960 til 2001. I did buy a new truck in 1969. It had a 6 cylinder engine and in 1978 I installed a 283 engine and sold the 6 cylinder.Hal

Here's a pic of the Bobcat taken in the early 80's. Built that log splitter about the same time. It has a 10hp Tecumseh engine. If you were ever in the Army after the mid 1960's the hydraulic cylinder was off the 8ton Goer. Bought everything else from Northern Hydraulics. Hal
