4 bottom plow change over to 3 bottom??

Hopefully this picture works, can this plow be changed easily to a 3 bottom?

Ah before you hack and wack here on this plow myself i would like to see a left side view a ft view . as i have in the past made many plows into less of a plow I have bought many 4,5,6 bottom plows and made them into what the area market i was taking the plows to wanted being a three bottom to 5 bottom . There are some plows that you can not cut down and make plow correctly , don't ask how i know this . Lets just say i gained extra parts.

No cutting required!Simply remove four 5/8 bolts that hold the standard to the4x5"'frame.If it doesn't work you easily return it back to 4.I have a #314,the 2 way vertion of your plow.years aGO i "STRETCHED" it from 3 bot to 4 bottom.Simply welded an exrtion to the frame and bolted another bottom to that.Simple.

If that plow was a 411 it would be simple but the way the sub frame is i can not say with out the ft view and side view . Most I H plows were easy but not all. Deeres were a pain and some of the Olivers were not easy. And if not done wright then they would not plow correctly . Trust me on this as i did this for better part of twenty years .the 550-560 plow could be cut down to a three bottom and plow just fine 700-720 is the same .

Vet,I too have 'modified 'plows for over 20yrs.Granted most were IH,a JD or two and an oliver. All were twoway.Have yet to do one that didnt work.

Only problem with dropping the 4th bottom on a 3pt plow is side draft.

The plow is set up to pull straight with 4 bottoms. The 3pt hookup is centered between the 2nd and 3rd bottoms.

When you remove the 4th bottom will pull uneven to the right, unless the 3pt can be slid sideways on the plow frame to re-center it on 3 bottoms.

Lot of difference between a rollover then a mounted or semi mounted Most and again i say most I H plows were based on a three bottom BUT there were a couple that were made as a four bottom and that is what your stuck with as if you try and drop a bottom they will Draft sideways . Just about like a five bottom onland plum sucks but the same plow in a 6-8 bottom is better and pulls easier . If you can handle five in the furrow then you can handle 6 onland just as easy if not easier at the same gear with better ground speed. Like when i first started farming on my own i had a Farmall 450 D and bought a set of 311 's in 3x14 while my buddy had a set of 540in 4x14's semi mounts with a harrow mounted on the plow . Both of us in the same field and me pulling one less bottom i should have walked all over him , not so we were both in third gear and i could not gain on him . One day i hooked to his plow just to see if my 450 had what his had the 540's pulled that much easier that i could pull the 4 bottoms in the same gear at the same depth as i was pulling the three bottom mounted . The 311's took a ride and i found a set of 540's with super chef bottoms where his plow had the Plow Chef bottoms adde a harrow and we cut our disking down to dead furrows and head lands for corn ground. Never went back to a mounted plow after that.

Pretty sure this is a Model 4-F43, later called a 4-FTC43 fast hitch plow. It was the only plow I know of with that type of frame and not available as a 3 point. According to the parts book, the plow is labeled a 4 furrow plow-reducible to 3 furrow. No way to side adjust the fast hitch points. Side draft shouldn`t be too much of an issue as the 4 bottom plow is designed to be able to drop a bottom and go to 3 bottoms.

Oh crap, I didn't notice that it was fast hitch... Sorry 'bout that.

Really, all you can do is give it a try. Unbolting the rear bottom and reattaching the tailwheel to the 3rd bottom ain't all that difficult.

Now that i see a side view of it Yes that one can be cut to three as for moving the forth bottom up WHY ?????? move the land side to the third bottom and bolt on the tail wheel as for the frame your choice here you can make a nice clean cut with the same amount of frame sticking out past the forth bottom or leave it if ya ever want to go back to four.

All I know is I`d have to swallow real hard before I started hacking on that nice plow... Lots of #311 plows to be had around here, maybe an option to just find one of them ?

Having the extra frame sticking out back isn't going to affect operation. Why are so many of you guys insistent on hacking the extra frame off?
