going to rebuild my Farmall M will super M / 400 liners with 4.125 bore & pop up pistons fit a 45 M block , also book shows an M with dry sleeves i thought they are wet , could someone shed some light on this project ,looking to get the most horse power for the buck if its getting done, have even thought about getting a 400 carb. if it will work for more power , everything in my parts book looks interchangeable , thanks in advance

I can't tell you what will interchange and what won't but the M, SM, 400 and so on all have dry liners. Sam

No 4.125 ID size piston sleeves won't fit a M without boring the block. M block bore without sleeves is 4.125 or real close.

"Way back in the day,TSC had information on boring out "H" and "M" blocks to fit oversize sleeves, including the counterbore.Mine is long lost now,but perhaps one of the guys will recall the specs,or still has the sheet TSC furnished.Seems I requested mine from the main TSC office, but its been at least 15 years.

Super M/400 cylinder liners will not fit in an M block. Super M/400 liners have a larger outside diameter. You can have a machine shop bore the block so you can use the larger liners.

As noted, they will not fit. Big bore kits with thin sleeves will work just fine. Popup pistons and a good valve job will perk it up. A slight increase in total advance can be helpful, But not more than about 5% of M spec. Good Fuel is needed, 92 octane might be needed, or a blend of 87 and 92. Jim

thanks for the replys , i thought ive heard talk of pullers having shop hone casted block & using 400 pistons without liners , or if there blocks are thick could machine it for 400 liners , i knew guys hear would be a great help , im more of an H guy this is my 1st M , thanks again for the replys

Ms were designed to run on 80 octane. The distillate compression ratio was only 4 to 1. Gas version 6 to 1.

pistons r a tad loose when block is honed for 4.125. Have your M block bored to fit liners from a super mta-450, but order a super mta engine kit, so it still has the M wrist pin, or get a set for a 450 and use the late 400 bushing for a lighter weight setup. really flush out the water jacket, especially upfront of the block. alot of sediment settles in there. a decent 281 engine is capable of 70hp. good luck, my email is open if u got some extra questions.

True enough if stock, If popup pistons are in it, and other tweaks, better gas will allow advanced timing. Jim
