frame weights

The parts book has 240/340 frame weights as 371389R1 and 371390R1. The 404 has the same part numbers but has R3 instead of R1. Does anyone know the difference between R1 and R3 or is the R3 just newer. Thanks Ed

Hi Ed, I think this topic came up a few months ago on here, don`t remember who brought it up, though. Anyways the R3 weights are different than the R1 weights. The R3 weights will fit a 404, 340 & 240. The R1 will fit the 340 & 240 only. The 404 front grill and bolster cover are a little wider than the 340 or 240 grills, therefore they had to make more clearance ( 3/8" or so ) in the area of the weight where it goes next to the grill. They also removed stock and made it more square in the area immediately behind the tabs that the slab weight mounts to. This gave additional clearance for the small sheet metal bolster cover below the grill. I took some pics of mine to show the difference.

Mark, Thanks for sharing as I have two pair and didn't want to have to handle them as they aren't on a tractor yet and were piled in the corner of the tractor shed. Hope you had a great vacation out west and missed you at the RPRU. Found a couple NOS items there for my Farmall 240 restoration I'm working on, Hal.

Hi there Hal. Ya, you don`t want to be handling too many of these weights, as they get heavy REAL quick !! It was just handy that I had them on the tractors at the moment and it was a rainy day here, so had some time to take a few pics to post. Lots easier to show the difference than trying to describe. I missed seeing you and all the rest of my tractor friends at RPRU , but heard it was dang HOT, so wasn`t too disappointed about missing that part of it. The trip was just great, we didn`t end up going thru Rolla, went down by KC, so will have to try and get to your place another time. Send or post some pics of your 240 when you get a chance, even if it`s not done- nic to see a restoration in progress, too. Take care.
