Working on an old H with a 6 volt Delco distributor/coil but coil doesn't look like an IH coil. Has been running OK but now a sometimes non- starter. There's about a 1 volt drop between the switch side and distributor side of the coil. Is that normal? Thanks!!! |

| Points ground the coil. When the points are closed, there should be no detectable voltage at the distributor side of the coil from the terminal to ground. When the points are open, with a good condenser, the voltage at the distributor side of the coil should be full battery voltage. The 2 to 3 ohms of resistance through the coil do not drop the voltage on an open circuit (like it is) enough to change the voltage reading on a Multi meter. So basically you cant measure the voltage drop and make sense out of it. In simple terms it is just like measuring from the block to the key with the points closed, and the low internal resistance allows a sensitive meter to read battery voltage right through the unloaded coil when the points are open. When the points are open the coil should read between 2 and 3 ohms measured across the little terminals Jim |

| Quoting Removed, click Modern View to seeUnless someone has stuck a resistor in line somewhere, you should be seeing full battery voltage when stalled, points closed, ign ON. |
