Farmall super md, is anybody familiar with these?

Good evening,
Recently I was approached by a neighbor who had bought a farm with a super md on it. It has been sitting under a lean to for several years under a rotting roof. I am not familiar with these at all as for I have never had one of these before. I am thinking about purchasing it to run a small square baler a couple times a year. I went over to take a look and it appears to be loose yet so I don't think it would be too terribly hard of a project. Does anybody have any experience with these? The way I understand they start on gas and switch to diesel? How does this work? Any suggestions or things to look for would be great. Thank you for your time

The best thing to start with is do some research on this site. Search for smd, super m diesel, gas start diesel, 400 diesel, 450 diesel etc. read all you can, become familiar with the tractor by purchasing a manual, and then we will help all we can. There is a tremendous amount of information on this website already. Good luck and enjoy.

All great advice. Google will provide a lot of good info as well.

Yes, they start on gas and switch to diesel.

From what I've read and heard and seen, when they work they're a neat piece of technology from days gone by. When they NEED work, they can be a real pain in the butt, and very expensive to fix.

Diesel injectors and injection pumps are not things your everyday shadetree mechanic can work on. If the pump is bad, you need to find someone with the proper equipment to work on it. Taking it apart yourself will do more harm than good.

Great tractors like all have said they are very complex engines and expensive to find engine parts for. Their biggest downfall is that when the tractor is rin hard ie running a baler you need to properly cool the engine down or they can crack the head, this is a very widely known and common problem that has always been associated with the ih gas start diesels. The best advice buy a $20 operators manual for the smd they can be found on ebay binder books ect. And familiarize yourself with the tractor. Again very nice find and there are a great group of guys on here that can answer any of your questions.

As others mention the SMD is a great tractor!

However the engine's starting and fuel systems are devilishly complex. Unless you are familiar with diesel engines in general, and also with the unique (and somewhat fussy) IHC "start on gas" system, you will be better off with a gas M/Super M - ESPECIALLY if you only plan use it a couple times a year.

OTOH if the price for the SMD is right, consider grabbing it to use in trade for a gas tractor!

Also no independent PTO on that tractor would be a drawback for pto baler work.
Depending on whats on it and the condition its probably worth $1000 to $2000 the way it sits.
If interested at least get a operators manual that will tell you how to work everything and some things on maintaining. Give it a try and see if it happens to run good.

Thankyou everybody for your help and tips on the tractor. Hopefully this weekend I can get it home and start on it a little bit. Thank you everybody
