Why does my PTO turn off going down hill?

It has always done this. I just found this forumn so I was hoping you guys know why and if there is a fix.

1969 856 Diesel, open station

Thanks

The PTO clutches are held engaged by hydraulic pressure. The pump is part of the PTO unit in the rear of the tractor.

When you go down a hill, all of the hydraulic fluid runs to the front of the rear end housing, starving the PTO unit of fluid. No fluid, no pressure, clutches release, and the PTO stops.

Either you are WAY low on hydraulic fluid, or the pickup tube is broken/dislodged and is sucking air.

You can go 5 gallons over full on the hydraulic fluid. It might help.

Like the rest have said and i will add to this To me the suction tube is one of the Pizzs poor designs and is easily damaged while the PTO is removed or replaced .or just gets messed up over time who knows. But either way if ya want to fix it your going to have to pull the PTO. If the tube is crushed where it mounts and is loose you can pop the flat spot out of the tube with a 5/8ths deep well Craftsman socket by driving it in and tapping it a bit , i have fixed many this way. Install a new seal the correct way then set the tube a little off center and tighten down the holding clam . Be careful when putting the PTO back in the tractor and not bang the tube.

Thank you for the reply. Will it hurt the tractor to run over full on the hydraulic fluid and does it have a hydrauilic fluid filter that I can service?

It won't hurt anything to run up to 5 gal over full and the hyd. filter is behind the RH step a round cover with 2 bolts.

No,it will not hurt a thing.Standard'fix' for a multitude of IH hydralic problems.,In fact,ALL of my 06/56 series tractors run "5 over".I even remarked the dipstick. The hydralic filter is located on the lower right side, underneath the brake pedals.Change it every time you change engine oil.The next thing to do is to "Buy a book!!"

could be as simple as the o ring on the pickup tube is bad. There is a chance as well that since it has been starved for fluid that you may have to replace your pto clutches as well- not a big deal
