Farmall M Lights

My M never gave me problems before with the lights they always worked great the other night they started flickering and out they went cant get them back on any ideas.
Thanks Aaron

Fuse holder, or fuse in the electrical box. A bad switch. A bad ground on the steering column will also cause that issue. Test voltage where it goes into the light. if it has voltage, the ground at the column is probable (both went out, so it must be before the wires split to each light, or after the ground is common to both lamps. If the rear light still works it could be the switch itself. Jim

Aaron there is a field resistor on the back of the light switch . If it goes bad you will have no lights. If its bad Steiner tractor parts has replacemnt resistors.

With respect, there is a dimming resistor, and it can go bad, but it will then only have bright lights. If it has a 4 position switch, it will also have a field resistor for the generator, but it will not affect the lights, good or bad. Jim

Janicholson I have a B and M and lost all lights on both of them when that resistor burnt out.The light switch in the off positon is normal charge The next one is high charge, then it goes low beam with rear light. the next click is high beam with rear light and last click is rear light only.

With respect, no flame, Sorry, there may be a totally different switch on yours, there are no 5 position switches on letter Farmalls from the factory. The power (light portion of switch) on D goes from the fuse to a resistor terminal through the resistor to a wire that splits to each light for dim lights, and from a separate terminal to the rear light. (full bright on that)
On the B position, the power goes to the light end of the resistor, (bypassing it entirely) and to the wire to the lights. Rear light same as before.
A bad switch and burnt resistor will cause front lights to fail to work, but a burnt resistor (light resistor) will only stop the front lights from working on D. Jim

I'd trouble-shoot something simple. If you have the same sort of lights like I do on an H, there might be a bare screw on the back of each light. Take a multi-meter and check to see if you have voltage there. With engine idling, I have about 10 VDC on dim, 14 VDC on high. If you do, your lights still might or might not work, but if you got yes voltage and no lights, it's probably simple as grounding. I didn't trust grounding through the rusty old light bar / frame, so I ran separate green grounding wires from each light bulb socket, using a small hose clamp, to the battery. Works great.
