I have been moving the same muffler back and forth from the H to the 300 and have noticed that the 300 seems much louder when running. I wear earmuffs when running a tractor anyway so it does not really matter but I wondered why that would be. One theory I have is that the higher compression ratio causes that louder noise but I am not sure if that really makes sense. The H has flat top pistons and a distillate head while the 300 has firecrater pistons and a gas head. Any ideas will be very welcome.

I bet that 300 sounds nice with the firecraters.

The differences you mention, plus greater displacement through the same Muffler, Plus a hotter cam in the 300 Makes the difference. Jim

Thanks, that makes a lot of sense. I put the wiring on the relay back so it matched the diagram you posted, except that I disconnected the wire from the I terminal. I will follow your recommendation about the diode if I seem to need it to start in the cold, but at least for now it seems to be starting fine without it.

Thanks. There is not supposed to be any voltage on the I terminal when it is disconnected, it is a completely separate little contact inside that only has a connection to the battery when the relay plunger is starting the tractor. If it is connected to the ignition, it will have voltage (through the ignition switch and ignition resistor) when ever the key is on. Jim
