removing cigarette lighter socket

Yes, I know it's a really minor thing compared to most of the problems on here but I'd like to take out the defunct cigarette lighter socket on my 454. And it's not obvious how it comes apart. I think the same part is used on many other '60s-'80s IH tractors. Does anyone have any advice before I just use a cutting wheel on a Dremel? Thanks.

I have one on my 504 that I would like to replace. It seems a cutoff wheel is almost the only option! Help us!!!

Does the parts book show anything? On most automotive ones the back screws off. I Put one on my JD so I could run a spot light from it. Why do you want to remove it?

It sort of looks as if that ought to be the case but the front part just spins relative to the back part, so it's not clear what one would grip onto and turn to disassemble it. The parts book isn't any help.

I have changed quite a few lighters is cars over the years. I use snap ring pliers to help remove them. Use the pliers that are for an outside snap ring and put them in the hole where the lighter goes in and squeeze. That works about 50% of the time when the whole thing spins. Most have pointy protrusions that go against whatever plate they are fastened to. If you use a cutoff tool, you just have to cut off the bottom inch or so.

If you can't get ahold of the "front" half, with a narrow vise grip then grind the outer lip off and drop it through and then unscrew the back.

Thanks for the snap ring pliers suggestion -- will try that and see if it helps. For those of you who haven't seen this particular kind of lighter, it's not quite like a car lighter, in that it doesn't just have a front lip but rather has a deep and loose front collar that seems to be retained by the (inaccessible) front lip. The collar spins freely and also allows the whole assembly to spin in the dash, making it darned hard to unscrew anything, which is why some of us are considering destructive removal methods. Overall a pretty diabolical little gadget...

I tried to remove mine about 2 years ago to replace with a functional part. I gave up until I decide to restore the tractor. But I have learned some tricks to try!
