350 diesel timing

White smoke that is diesel fuel means cylinders are not firing. Running very rough. If it was running for 5 minutes and didn't clear up, things that can be wrong are from stuck valves to low compression or bad injectors. Not diagnosable from the description given.
If it is antifreeze, it will smell sweet, and the enging might run fairly well. The coolant will however disappear. Jim

Late timing will cause white smoke also and make it scatter miss firing around all cylinders. The parts book shows a automatic advance on that pump so static timing and running advancing timing are both issues to be looked at. It requires a plastic window on side of pump to check running automatic advance. Don't have specs for that engine but IH did have a very good service manual just on that pump and injection system.

Does your 350 have the Continental diesel? I just did my Roosa Master pump on my '57 350D. Static timing that pump isn't much different than a distributor. It runs real good now. PK
