Farmall Super H Pictures. any suggestions

would you guys reuse the original pistons? rings are stuck sleeves are out. block , crank and internals beautiful shape. towed with very good oil pressure so i am assuming the mains are good.

Depends on your planned useage for the tractor is.New fings and a good honeing will probably suffice. You have bigger problems with that head.....

yea the head is shot good for boat ankor. im on the fence with which direction for the head. i originally purchased this tractor un aware of its condition ...pig and a poke. tore it down after reading the post of this tractor on this forum with the kid stating he had water pushing out of the stack when towing to get it started. thought well i will yank the sleeves and see holes in the water jacket but none to be seen. went and had the head baked and sure enough crack and now feel way better knowing the head was the issue all along. i plan to replacde the sleeves was just wondering if i should toss new pistons in or reuse the old ones.

probably use the tractor for brush hogging my fields and dirt plow. kind of want to keep as much original as i can im wierd like that.

Need to measure the pistons and ring groves for a opinion on replacing. Area of the head you marked in the first picture is not tappered back on a 8043DC or previous head. They are squared off like the sides of the combustion chamber. Some firecrater type pistons on 3-5/8 bore engines will hit the squared edge unless some grinding is done. Not sure about 3-9/16 bore ones. With flattops no problem.

so really if i go with a 8043 dc and flat pistons new like i have the pistons should clear. i do have to pull the rings and check the ring grooves for wear and tolerance. not to keep this going but how do you remove the radiator on these with the wide front on? the plate has no access holes to the radiator studs... do i have to pull the entire front end off? thanks Bill

Yep,if the boltholes are gone,ya gotta pull the frontend...While its off, take your torch and make holes.Next time the radiator has to come out,you will be glad...

ok. man i like these farmalls but some of the stuff they did to make my life miserable is starting to make me ugly....

Engine kits (pistons, sleeves, rings, gasket kit) don't cost that much. Particularly for flat top pistons they can be replaced by stepped heads for more power. An exception to that is my Super M with fire craters. I ordered a new kit for it, but the new stepped head pistons have less compression than the fire craters. My machinest/mechanic said the fire crater pistons were ok and cleaned them up. So I am using new sleeves and rings and the old fire craters.

Used to have to replace piston pins with .005 oversize on some of these engines, may want to keep in mind if you decide to reuse pistons/sleeves you have, check for pin wear as you get into the job. Also used to knurl the piston skirts as well.Guess thats showing my age-

If you are going to buy rings and sleeves you would probably be better off to buy a kit and get the pistons as well.

So what head would you have to run to put in high compression (non-flat) pistons?

If those are the only cracks in the head it doesn't look too bad.

The crack in the combustion chamber looks to be a fairly easy fix either by welding or plugging. The cracks in the other picture may not bother at all. The only one of real concern it the top one. If it extends into the bolt hole it should be repaired. The other cracks shown there will not bother since they will be sealed with the head gasket.

i tried to take another picture of the crack but the crack extends up into and under the valve seat about 2 inches the picture only shows about half the crack. Bill

im in debate on the pistons for now. i may reuse what i have but one has a small chip and i really dont want to pull this motor back apart after all this work. right now the rings are stuck i have not tried to take them off yet if the pistons check ok i might just reuse them. dunno yet...
