Price for a Farmall H

My great uncle passed away this past may, and he has a "few" tractors. A big case collection and a few farmalls. I want to buy his Farmall H before the farm auction the 29th of september. The h was one of my great uncles 2 farmalls. I am only 17 and want his treasured farmall, but dont know what to offer my great aunt for the tractor.the tractor has a decient paint job, and runs good, but the back tires are completly shot. What would be a fair price to offer my great aunt for this tractor? i was thinking aroun 1500 to 2000 dollars? is it to high, to low? Can you help me out?

Sentimental value can make it worth more, but what you described is about $1200. Tires are not cheap now days. For $2000, I would expect good paint, very good tires, and some work done in the recent past.

I would be hard pressed to pay over 7-800 for it. Ya g otta keep in mind, a set of rear tires are gonna set ya back about a thousand bucks with tubes. But, being a family haurloom would make it worth more to you. I have my great uncles 51M that i would not take 5,000 bucKs for it.

It sounds like maybe $800 range. Location, maintenance, tires, etc all play a big part in price.
I will say that if the tractor is listed in the auction sale flyer for the auction or the auction is already booked, you will probably have to wait until the auction. Technically it is bait and switch tactics if something is listed then not sold sale day.

I think if you're willing to go that high you should wait for the auction and just bid on it. Not likely that anyone would outbid you and nobody can argue about the price.

I agree, wait and buy it at the auction unless there is some kind of family dynamic going on that would make someone outbid you just for spite.

The bad rear tires kills the price. I would say $800. Maybe $1,000 if you want to help your aunt out. If it goes through the auction might be the best way. Then no one will accuse you of "stealing" it. And you will still get it for less than $1200.

I just reread what I typed. I did not explain what I was thinking very well. The $1200 I said is with the sentimental value figured in. You can pick up a pretty good old H right now for $600-$900 about anywhere.

i'd say 800 to 1000 i don't think i would wait on the auction somebody there may have a deeper pocket than you

Same here. No way that tractor is worth $1500 other than an extra 2-300 bucks to keep it in the family. Buy it at the auction and I bet you don't spend much over a grand.

I have had 4 1940 Hs for sale for years now and the top $$ one I was asking $900 for and the low one $400 and still have all 4 of them. 3 run and diver and the tires hold air the cheap one is locked up and is a parts tractor but still have them all

what part of the country do you guys live in? Here in CT, a H would be offered for not less than $1500 even with the bad tires.

the biggest issue I have is locating the mythical $500 tractor locally...in any condition

I would offer $1,500 and be willing to pay even more just to keep it in the family. If you wait for the auction, there is a very real chance you won't get it.

That H should not bring more than $1,500 at the auction, but it takes only 2 bidders with more money than sense to achieve a ridiculous selling price.

If you've got the money, and your great aunt is willing, GO GET THAT TRACTOR.

What you are describing is $800 tops. $200 more for the sentiment. Offer her $1000 or wait for the auction.

Is the tractor "the one" that your grandfather or great-grandfather bought new and farmed with all his life, or just one that your great uncle bought used within the last 30 years?

Most guys on this forum are well established like your great uncle was and already have their own land and sheds and plenty of money to spend on their tractors. At age 17 you will have a lot of experiences, expenses and changes coming up in the next ten years of your life:
school;
girl friends;
career;
cars and vehicles;
apartments;
multiple moves;
marriage;
children;
buying a house; etc.

At this stage of your life a tractor can easily become a larger burden and expense than you really want to have. Like a large pet, sometimes they are more than your situation can handle and you have no choice but to give it up again.

Make sure you have an agreement on how you will move it and where you will store the tractor before you put any bid on it. If you have to rent a 10 x 20 foot storage garage it can cost $75 a month or more.

Well you guys i went for it. I paid 850$ for the H. I looked her over and am very happy with my purchace. it is one of the only farmalls my uncle farmed with, and i had to have it. So thanks for the advice. And The sale bill HASNT BEEN WRITTEN but the sale is the 29th, and im glad i got her b4 it would be a problem. My Aunt is happy, and im Happy. Thanks Guys.

My dad retired from the Army in 71, got the farm in 72 and started farming. He had a JD R and a AC CA. He got both used. I got married in 73 and joined the Army in 74. I retired in 96 a few years after dad passed. I would give a lot to find his R or CA. My kids have all offered to kick in if needed should I find one. You cannot put a value on something like that! I got back from Germany in 87. Dad had sold the R to a young start up guy to help him out but still had the CA. Dad agreed to keep the CA. Told mom. After dad passed when mom was a little short she sold the CA in spite of knowing she wasn't supposed to (she could have called and I would have sent her money). All traces of both tractors are gone forever. Take what you can when you can, life is no rehearsal!

I paid more than you did for the 42 H that my grandfather bought new, and was happy to get it. It's been in the family since new and I want to keep it there. Thees lots of H's but only one that grandpa bought.
