MD Mag is Dead

Whats the best way to go about that since you can see the top
of the piston through the spark plug hole. My hand crank is
rusted up too and i cant turn it over by the crank pulley.

If i dont turn the tractor over, mark the mag orientation and the
rotor position, can i reinstall to match and still be ok/in time?

There should be a pointer and mark (notch) on the pulley on the front of the engine. Line those up and note where the rotor is pointing and then take the mag off. When you put it back, make sure the rotor on the mag is pointing the same direction as when you took it off and you should be good to go. If your crank thing is stuck, you can turn the engine by using the belt pulley flange. Put the transmission in neutral and the pulley in gear. Put a couple of bolts in the flange and use a bar to turn the pulley flange and thus the engine. Just be sure there is no possibility the engine can start when you do this!! If you take the plugs out and put the start lever in gas position, it will be easy to turn the engine with this method.

Yes thats the way i do them if they are setting on fire position the rotor will snap when you remove then be hard to put back in. Just remember where the rotor is pointed then you can re-install with rotor in same position and be fine. When installing you can be correct or 180 out. Been doing them that way for many yrs.

Thanks guys! Will get it pulled tomorrow. I replaced the coil and condensor but I either did something wrong or still have other problems...still no spark!

Rub those points with 320 wet or dry until they're shiny then see if you have fire. Is the impulse coupling snapping? You can pull the mag
by bringing No1 piston to TDC on the compression stroke as been suggested or note where your rotor is pointing on the cap and make a sketch. THEN DON'T MOVE THE ENGINE after the mag's removed. When the mag is returned rotate the rotor to the spot shown in your sketch and reinstall the mag. Also note how the plug wires are installed on the cap so they're in the correct firing order. Hal

Yep i tried that. It has been down for a few months as I have not had time to work in it. Just replaced the coil and condesor and still nothing so I either did something wrong or have other problems. Time for a professional I guess. This is the only magneto I have and first time I have ever had any trouble with it.
