i had to get rough with a universal joint on an old bush hog. when i removed it, i lost some of the needles. is there any way to recover from this without buying a new universal joint?

joints that i have taken apart, have smaller needles in them.

Well i have never had any luck with it , i use to try and save any needles that were good and kept them in a little organizer and ya know what i was never able to match any of them with that one missing needle . so they all got trashed and i figured it was a whole bunch easer to just stock a couple of the most used joints . Once ya got stock on hand ya will never need them .

One time I had one apart at the farm and lost 2 or 3 needles. Since I was a long distance from any parts I cut up some nails of similar diameter and alternated them just for needle spacers. I finished the weekend with it and then took it home and rebuilt it properly. A shade tree repair to get the job done. If you look at different quality ball bearings some cheap ones have the balls spaced quite far apart.

Is there any way to get one of those magnets that carpenters use to pick up nails? That's recovered some small parts for me multiple times out of gravel or grass. Can't remember where I got mine, but it has a 3ft handle and is t shaped.

I've done the same thing, with the same results.

It is best to simply get a new u-joint.

Yep and if ya keep them on hand ya will never need it . The only thing i kept on the shefl that was needed either by me or my buddy and local Ford dealer were spider gear repair Pkg. for the Danna 44 ft axle and i kept three on hand at all time , ate them like M&M 's

CPS on a 7.3 l Powerstroke sure isn't a bad part to have in the glove box at all times either. I'm only on my third with 150k, but I have heard of guys going through a few per year. They issued a recall and the new part is "fixed."
