Farmall B Age

I recently purchase a Farmall B. The seat brackets with the serial number are gone. The seat has been replaced with a different type of seat. How can I tell what the year of manufacture of this tractor? Do the numbering and letters on the engine block and transmission housing provide any clue to the age?

There is a serial number on the engine. If I remember right it is on the right side behind the oil filter and that will be the serial number of the tractor unless the engine has been changed then it will be the engine number

Warren, the engine serial number is just below number one(front)spark plug. There is a flat spot there with serial number which is hard to find as it is behind the throttle linkage and is usually covered with many layers of paint and years of dirt/grease. There are cast codes that look like slotted screw heads with month day and year codes. The letter J is 1939 and up through R which is 1948. The main cast parts, including engine will have these codes.

Dave has the location correct. The flat is not that large and the numbers were stamped into the flat. The engine number and the serial number for the unit will match unless someone has switched out the motor. The cast codes were larger and were cast into all the parts.

The number behind the oil filter is the block casting number. The serial is to the front as the others have stated.

The engine numbers and serial numbers matched until serial number 201000. After that, they didn't match but were generally close. The non-matching ones were all built in 1947.

Just remember the tractors built in Louisville started with serial# 200,000 in 47 lower serial#s were built in Chicago
